View Full Version : Strobes during ceremony?

I have a location with a white dome ceiling. I'm thinking about using strobes versus using the flash bracket.
The plan is to bounce them off the ceiling from the back corners of the room.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I basically won't consider using flash during a ceremony. One of the reasons I have primes :)

How do you handle poor lighting?

Ceremony is just plain difficult to shoot sometimes. There are occasions when there's not enough light - even when I borrowed a 50 f/1.4 it wasn't enough for one of my more recent full weddings. I use flash when necessary, but just about anything can be distracting, even the shutter click.

The 1.4 doesn't do too bad in my current situation. I'd rather not have the ISO high though. The venue is a semi circle and small enough that I could shoot from the back and sides with the 70-200 2.8 and cover nearly everything including close-ups. I'll be doing some more tests during the rehearsal and let the clients decide on the strobes. Worse case scenario I could shoot with no flash, I'd just rather not have more work in PP.

ISO1250, f/1.2, and 1/50th worked for me :) But now with 5DMKII's, ISO4000 is completely usable so it's even better now!

I use flash at about 3% of indoor ceremonies. I had a ceremony in a hotel once where the exposure without flash would've been 1/10th iso3200 f1.4. I put up two studio strobes bouncing off the lowish ceiling and got sharp shots with good lighting. Without flash it would've been pretty much impossible. These days I use speedlites with radio triggers. Because I had two big lights I shot less than usual.
