They enforce the ban on flash and tripods. I recommend a lens equipped with IS, and I recomment that you carry the camera in a simple bag that is not overly large.

It's strange actually, because I visited their site about a year ago and they had the flash and tripod ban on there but not the rest of it.

I cannot understand how detachable lenses will harm the art.

I took some shots there a long time ago with a film slr before and don't recall any problems. Granted it was a fairly amateur slr.

My personal experience with museums have been that they don't mind slr's with interchangeable lenses.

I don't know of a museum that allows anyone to use tripods/reflectors/lights/flash. Some have been stopped with a large bag b/c security is worried about your turning around and hitting an artwork or something.

They also don't let you shoot work that is not their own (artwork on loan).

If you went with a discreet small bag (or better yet no bag) and are just handholding a dslr and not shooting inches from the artwork, I'd be surprised if security would bother you.

Thanks for the replies guys, my interests are taking pictures of sculptures rather that what hangs on the walls.

Chauncey......we were just down there a few weeks ago to get some shots of the gallery changes that have been made.
You need to get a "camera pass" at the entrance desk (it's free).

I have been able to get some pretty decent images of the Greco-Roman sculptures in that gallery area.

Also some decent Egyptian bas-relief panels.
They do get a bit touchy about flash use. A lot depends on the security people in the area.

Thanks guys

Only reason I brought it up was that I got an unsolicited free admissions pass for several adults and all children under 16 y/o.
Figured that it would be an interesting day.

Appreciate the input.

ok, I understand the no tripod rule... but "detachable lenses"... that escapes me... pretty much means
"people with SLRs go home! :) are they afraid that i'll throw my 17-40L at the pic? seriously though...

They're simply working under the false assumption that SLR = High Quality

Someone needs to educate some of these places that Aunt Jane's G10 is quite capable of making billboards...
