I am trying to decide whether or not to get the Sigma 1.4x TC. I will be taking photos of my kids' soccer games. Just don't want to get the TC and get low quality shots. Anybody here shoot with the 70-200 w/1.4x TC? Please...pretty please post some pics!:)
Thanks!

As stated before the 1.4 is really good and hard to see any degradation. Unlike the 1.4, the 2.0tc is pretty easy to see flaws in your images, and I rarley use it. I just keep it in the bag for the "if I only had a longer reach" emergencies...

You're right, Dito! I hardly see any degradation at all, if any. I've heard others say that they weren't as satisfied with the 2x TC as they were with the 1.4x.
You all have provided me with some very good shots to help with my decision. I'm off to check out some 1.4x TC at B&H!:D

Well, that's a good question. I bought it because I didn't have much budget left at the time, but I needed the extra reach for a specific project. I got it because this review:
http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/reviews/tcs.html
said that the center sharpness was comparable to the Canon 1.4 although it was softer at the edges.
For me it sometimes works well, but at other times it seems to have trouble focusing and loses some contrast.
These days I tend to avoid using it at all. Maybe someday I'll try the Canon and see if there is a big difference.

For comparison, about the same distance with the same lens but without the converter (cropped more to make it up):

Obviously, lighting was different but I think this shows that you lose some sharpness and gain something from not having to enlarge the grain/noise. Overall, is it a profit? I think so but it is not a lot.

Does the Kenko/Tokina 1.4 Pro report the correct info to the camera? I believe it was Ed who supplied this link and I'm thinking of purchasing it. Plus, not completely sure how many, or what lenses this TC will work with. I know the Canon TC is much more limited to the lenses it's compatible with.

Yes it does with ten pin lenses. i.e. those lenses with which the Canon Extender or Sigma Teleconvertor are compatible.
It will also work with incompatible lenses, that have seven pins, but does not report its presence with those.

And for a huge bump....
While it seems that 1.4TC's generally preserve quality pretty well, and 2xTC's are pretty poor (although no one posted images with this - could anyone do this?), has anyone tried stacking two 1.4TC's for an effective 1.96TC. Is the quality better/worse/same than a 2xTC? Thanks!

canadianbacon52
23rd of June 2007 (Sat), 23:58
The AF will work with a 2x TC on a 2.8 lens, but not a f/4 lens. However, if the TC does not report to the camera, then the camera will still be able to use the autofocus, but it won't work very well since the lens will be at f/8. There's a reason that Canon made the autofocus limit 5.6...

Changed the neighbor's cat for this Heron I got out in my from yard about a month ago. This is with my 70-200 f/2.8 [280mm @f/4, 1/5000s and ISO 400. Should have cranked the iso down to get a more sharp image, but I am still learning by and large. I would like to blame my IQ on a soft copy of the lens, but I have tested it on a tripod and that is not it. It is me!

yes, the 1.4 + an f/4 lens will give you f5.6 and maintain AF on all the canon bodies.
just to make it more confusing i believe on the 1d/1ds (and only those) the 2x will maintain AF even with an f/4 lens

It would work fine with your 85, I wouldn't use it on the kit lens and I wouldn't use it on your Tamron zoom (would make it too slow, and probably would have a tough time with AF).

Thanks, I want to get it for use with some extension tubes and my 85 for some macro play. Then I eventually want to get the 100-400 Canon or the 70-200 USM IS Canon. Though, If I could use it with my Tamron, perhaps in Manual Focus, then at least I know it would be usable in a pinch.

I don't have the Kenko but after using my Tamron during sports I found that I get more keepers without the TC than with. But the keepers that I do get with the TC are better than the ones without, because I get better background seperation and don't have to crop as much. I only use the TC when the light is very good.

Was thinking about purchasing a 70-200 f/2.8 L, and Canon 1.4x TC which would be primarily used for motorsport, would this combination be ok for that type of application? Are there any photos out there that could be posted to have a look at? Have had a look at this thread and the air show pics look amazing. If there are any photos with the 2x TC I would be interested to see them also, as I was considering purchasing a 2x TC as well. Any other options / opinions would be appreciated.

Here are a few samples I have using my 70-200mm F/2.8L (non-IS) along with the Tamron 1.4 Pro TC.
I've gotten some really good results with this combination, but I've also had a few times where I had almost no keepers. I'm not sure if it technique or equipment yet, but I'm leaning towards faulty technique.
Handheld, low light conditions, just before sundown. Approx 80-100ft from subject.

Dang, those are some big deer. Are they Mules? Can't decide between a Canon 1.4 TC or a 300 f/4 L IS. For the price difference I'm thinking the TC would get me by.

They are red dear- quite big but were also some distance away from where i was stood. That shot is a crop of a larger image.
Its a great combination if you are on a budget- but judging by your gear i am guessing thats not an issue :) If you can afford it go with the 300F4IS it will be sharper than the combo alternative.
For me the combo is a good cost:production ratio- i cant justify large expensive purchases for my hobby :(

I didn't know where to post this but this is the closest place I can post this picture.
for all those debating between a 1.4tc or a 2.0tc. Here is a shot with my 70-200 2.8 non-IS with a 2.0tc. With the tc, I notice a slower reaction to auto-focus and it shrinks the aperture from f/2.8 to f/5.6. I had a polarizing filter on the lens to cut the reflection in the water.
Side note: this was shot with a XTi.

Using the 70-200 2.8 IS version in low-light concert photography with a 1.4x T-con for these shots. It performed very well I thought, especially considering the conditions.
1. This one was taken with a 70-200 with a 1.4x Tcon attached, at 3200 ISO. It didn't come out bad considering.

2. A similar shot here, but at 1600 with no T-con. Interesting to see the comparison I think. Shows the T-con performs pretty well IMO.

I ended up getting the Kenko 1.4x Pro 300 DG Extender. I have only used it once so far
(today), but I'm pretty impressed. It was bright and sunny, so I had no problems with AI
Servo tracking moving subjects, AF was still quick and accurate. I think it will be a
normal part of my setup for outdoor sports. The shots are more than acceptable for my
uses (normally I do very few large prints). On "test" shots there may be a bit of
difference between TC and no-TC, but it's not really noticeable until you get to 100%
crops.
Here's a couple shots from my first day using it. Did a 100% crop of the first shot.

finally something somewhat decent to contribute:
Saw this guy (and 2 little ones) in my friends backyard while visiting Austin this past weekend. This was about the only decent one I got with the 70-200 F/2.8L + Tamron 1.4TC combo:

So as I was getting ready to order my first teleconverter, I was seriously conflicted over whether to get the 1.4x or 2.0x. My logic was that, while the IQ and AF hit with the 2.0 was going to be greater, the 1.4x gain over the 200mm on the 70-200 really wouldn't justify the cost.
I guess on some level I reasoned that if the 2x tele converter proved to be unacceptable, I could always get the 1.4x later and deal.
I will agree that the AF is significantly slower with the TC attached. That said, I really had to share these two pics I took with the combo over the July 4th weekend.
The first is an ant that was dragging a young grasshopper body back to its nest. This was taken at 200mm (400mm equivalent) at near to minimum focus distance, and this is roughly a 100% crop. It didn't work out to be eactly 100%, but it's close enough. While it's not nearly as sharp as some options, I'm more than thrilled with the results! It's certainly the best longer lens I could get for the money. Keep in mind this ant was 1/2" (12mm) long at best, so this is some crazy magnification given the nearly 6'/2m working distance:
http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/363/antatauntkris0015.jpg
And then a moon pic from a few nights ago. This is a 100% crop. Again, there are better out there, but I'm still very happy with the results.
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/2627/westernprommoon0024.jpg
The primary reason I posted this is because I had a hard time finding a post where someone showed the results of the 2x converter on the 70-200. And given all of the warnings to the contrary, I wanted to post a few photos that I felt showed the combination to be more than acceptable. Exif should be intact on both.

Thanks for posting this. I have a 70-200 f4 L and a Tamron 1.4 TC and I'm very happy with the combo but of course I want something longer.Next week I'll be doing a two day shoot on Vancouver Island with a friend who has a 300
f4 IS and a 1.4 Canon TC so I'll be able to try that combo as well as trying two 1.4X stacked. It would be interesting to see a comparison between two 1.4's
and a 2X.In the end I will probably pick up a 2X now and then some long primes when I can.

100% crops, no processing:

Hi folks,
I am about to purchase this lens ( Ef 70-200 F2.8 IS L II, plus 2x extender) through out my positive reviews about this combination. I am falling in love with it.
I have EOS 500D camera, I know its compatable with this lens. the question, is it going to give me the same razor sharp image quality pictures as the one's posted on this forum? considering most of the pictures taken with advanced EOS 1ii, EOS 5D, EOS 50D and so forth.
Thanks all,

This was with a 7D, 70-200 IS f2.8L lens plus 2X TC, standing in a boat on a windy day, so I was mostly satisfied with the result. This is about a 75% crop. I've had the camera outfit for about 3 months. The second pic is a low-res version of the original image. I'm guessing I was 100 yards away from the base of the tree.

Thanks Tony, it's at good ól PIR. The nice thing about bike track days is they let you walk just about anywhere but the bad thing is you have to walk EVERYWHERE haha. It was extremely hot but it was worth it for the shots. They usually have an open drag night on Friday's. I'd suggest checking it out at least once. Some very cool cars and people there.
