Hello,
I just reciently got an A40, and had no problem hooking it up to my system with the USB cable:
Athalon 800 Mhz
392 Mb Ram
Win 2K (service pack 3)
I was able to download images off the camera without any problem, and Win2K reconized the camera every time I hooked it up.
Then for Xmas I got a Visioneer 7100 USB scanner. I hooked up the scanner on the second USB port and was able to install it without any problem. But then I could not get the A40 connected to the computer on the other USB port.
So, I unsintalled the Scanner software and the A40 connected again. I went back to re-install the scanner, and the camera would not connect.
So now I am stuck. I can connect the Scanner or Camera. Does anyone know the nature of this problem?
Am I better off just getting a USB card reader, and not connecting the camera?
Thanks.

Yes you certainly are.
the download times are much much faster for one, and secondly no fiddling with cables to the camera.
extremly easy to use as well.

I agree with the previous contributor about getting a USB card reader they are very useful and can save you a lot of hassle. You can also take it to your work or school with your files on it and plug it in. Not only can the CF card (CF is the format I'm using) hold pictures and video files but you can use it to hold other kinds of data... Word Files, Excel Spreadsheets etc. I think the problem you are describing is that you need to go into the application you are using and select File and Import and select the device you want to use at that particular time, scanner or camera. Find these and click on one of them and click on OK. Let me know if this helps.

I went out and got a simple USB CF card reader. It was a bit tricky to get the scanner installed again. I had to remove all other USB devices and re-install the scanner software. Once that was done and the scanner was fully functional, I plugged in the USB CF reader and it was active, without any drivers.
The scanner still works and now I have a quick way to download pictures, without having to plug in the camera and drain the batteries.
Seems that the scanner was the problem the whole time. The camera was working fine, until it came along. But in the end I am happier with the card reader.
Thanks for the advice.

How much storage capability do these card readers have? In particular, on a long trip away from a computer, can you download images onto the card reader for storage, while you delete the images from your camera memory card?

The card reader does not have it's own memory. It is a USB device that hooks to the computer or laptop and allows you to transfer the contents of the card to the hard drive of the PC or laptop.
The reader cannot hold data until it is connected. At least not the one that I have.

You are correct in saying the card reader does not have any memory storage of its own. It acts just like an external floppy disk drive allowing you to save, delete, copy and move files. The actual CF cards come in 32MB, 64MB, 128MB and 512MB (the largest I've seen) and this is were the storage is done. The most recent versions of Windows and Apple OS 9 and above don't need driver software installed.
