this may but a stupid idea but could you make your own umbrella using a old umbrella taking the fabric out and covering the whole thing in tin foil or some kind of silverish material???
same with the reflectors?

I actually started doing this with my daughter's broken umbrella - then someone gave me a real one for Christmas. I think the whole setup - umbrella, flash attachment and light stand - was about $50. My homemade version promptly went in the garbage!

I agree. If you think umbrellas are too expensive, you're looking at the wrong ones. Check out the Photogenics at B&H.

If you just need something to bounce light off, a plain white 30" X 40" card on a light stand works well.

Try www.warehouseexpress.co.uk (http://www.warehouseexpress.co.uk) Brollies really aren't that expensive, and worth it for the quality over a home made jobbie. They're easier to place, give you the option of relect or diffuse, and look more professional on a shoot!

i wouldnt recommend doing it at home with the tin foil because there will be creases in the foil, and this will distorts the light creating shadow regions. Not a shadow in the sense that u see a easily visible grey spot, but ur lighting wont be as white as it could be, if that makes any sense. Trying to keep it as simple as possible.

A good alternative to building one's own umbrella is to use the Goodyear blimp as a reflector. It reflects a wonderfully broad and open expanse of light.
well i gave it a go http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v608/tatton/IMG_2612.jpg

There are some things there is no point of making at home. An umbrella is one of them. A good one is pretty cheap, you would be better off spending the time making an umbrealla on setting up your scene/subject.
At the end of the day, a ghetto studio tends to turn out ghetto looking pictures........

Lisa,
First, welcome to POTN! Please turn off your caps lock key.
Second, this thread is 17 months old and the OP hasn't had any activity here for two weeks.
Third, as mentioned by several people in the thread, silver photo umbrellas are inexpensive enough that it hardly pays to try to build one. If you made one with aluminum foil like the one pictured, it wouldn't fold up very well.

43" white translucent umbrellas cost about $15. I dont see why you would go to the trouble to make your own for something that cheap.
Unless, you just want something to do and have gratification of making it yourself. In which case have fun and post some pics of the finished product!
