Any tips for New York

[Treat me like a tourist]

I am travelling to New York on Tuesday- i am very excited about this, have been saving for two years and have 6 nights in the city- i cannot wait!
I know there are plenty of threads on New York but i was hoping for some good tips, where are the must shoots, any places that are good for breakfast, lunch evening meals, are there any bars worth checking out for live music- i have read all the guides but you really cant beat personal recommendations.
So any tips?

Too much to itemize here. Get a tour guide and pick the things you like. All food and drink in NY is fairly expensive, but the places are everywhere. You gotta do Central Park, Empire State building, Statue of Liberty, St Patrick's, the museums, Circle tour around Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge, etc, etc.

I see lots of conventional skyline and traffic NYC pictures here (which are often quite beautiful) but as someone who works in the city, don't forget that you're surrounded by millions of living, breathing, and tremendously colorful models. Don't hesitate to shoot people-- as any native New York can attest, having a camera shoved in your face probably isn't the most bizarre thing that happened to you that day.

I would suggest taking a cab to Bleeker and MacDougal for bars with live music. Cafe Wha and Red Lion are practically historic landmarks. Avoid Times Squares as everything is over-over-priced (as opposed to normal places in NYC, which are just overpriced). MOMA is a terrifc museum that usually has a photography exhibit or two, and of course a few blocks away from that you have Central Park. Just get lost and have fun.

I suggest you visit top of the rock. Great views and photo ops and much less crowded than empire state and less tourists go there :) Make sure you eat some dirty water dogs, taste ethnic food. Also don't always have your head in the sky i hate blind tourists walking into me, be respectful as if you were at home. Thursday night is great to walk around the galleries in chelsea as that's when they start their exhibits, if you not sure where just follow the crowds there as they hop from gallery to gallery :D

Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge starting from the Manhattan side. When you get to the Brooklyn side take a break for some pizza in Grimaldi's*, then walk down to Brooklyn Bridge Park for a classic view of the skyline. You should then be able to find a cab back into the city around the River Cafe area. The entire expedition will eat up a few hours.
