View Full Version : Canon or Sigma 70-300?

I presently have a Sigma 70-300 1:4-5.6 APO lens. It is not compatible with the 20D (constant Error 99's and when I called Sigma and gave them the serial # they said the newer APO "Super" lens will work). They will take my lens in trade for the newer model for $167 + shipping.

Would this be the way to go, or would I be getting a better lens for almost the same price in the Canon 75-300/4-5.6 III USM? (I would then give the older Sigma to my daughter along with my old 35mm Rebel).

Thanks...

Have a read of the reviews here (http://www.photographyreview.com/Lenses/PSC_3787crx.aspx) and a http://fredmiranda.com , and you should be able to make up your own mind. Personally I went for the Sigma, which I returned because F5.6 is just too narrow for most work unless you're outside on a bright day - forget indoors. I'll be getting an F2.8 70-200 some tiem.

The new Apo model is a step sharper than any canon 75-300 by all accounts.
Here is a good comparison -

Besides the trade in option you may consider selling the old Apo on ebay where is should bring a nice handy price-then go buy the new Apo version at B&H.
You'd probably come out ahead that way

I think the trade presented by Sigma is a load of crap. They need to rechip that lens for free. $167 is only about 15 or 20 dollars less than it can be had for new. Sell the old one on ebay to a film user and make sure to tell them its not compatable with digital and go buy a new one for a little less than $200.

All the lenses in this class are dogs but the Sigma APO is the dog king.

Sigma has been very nice to you, I bet and assure you, Canon would not be. Canon doesn't pay respect to customers. It will be a rip off. The sell defetcive items too. Beware! I have suffered recently a great jolt. Canon warranty policy is a big hoax.

I bought a Canon 180 mm Macro `L' series, shoking it was D-O-A, Canon paid no heed to my crying so far. When I asked Canon US, they advised me to send it for repaire, which will partly paid, as warranty do not cover al parts.

I have paid for a new lens and why should I settle for a repaired lens. To learn about my painful and real episode write to me wildhiss@rediffmail.com

I agree with tim, the dealer you bought it from should stand behind their products as delivered. As delivered product satisfaction is the dealer responsibility. If not, your problem was the dealer. :(

Most warranties are repair or replace at discretion of the company.
