View Full Version : Are you Left-Eyed, or Right-Eyed?

I'm reading (yes, I can read, but I prefer pictures) Joe McNally's book The Hot Shoe Diaries, Big Light From Small Flashes.

While he's right handed, he's always used his left eye in the viewfinder, which seems to give him an advantage when holding the camera in such a way that he can hold it steady at very slow shutter speeds.

So, You Left or Right Eyed?

Left eyed now for sure. I caught a piece of steel in my right eye last year while grinding. At night time what my left eye see's as one light my right see's three.

left, but usually keep both open.

Right eye on the viewfinder, left eye open kinda sorta watching what's going on. It helps when say a basketball is about to hit me in the face and I'm looking off at the team bench.

My right eye is dominant/stronger, but I much prefer to use the left eye for photography. If I use my right, I have to close the left one to concentrate, which gets very tiring for me and gives me a headache. If I use the left in the viewfinder however, the right one is almost totally blocked by the camera, so I can keep it open without it distracting me.

After reading Thalagyrt's comment however, if I take up sports shooting I might just switch!

Right eye for sure. Always been right-eye dominant, so much so, that I can't even blink my right eye w/o closing my left.

Left-eyed, but often keep my right eye open to keep an eye on the action going on around me.

P.S. Can a Poll be added to this thread? The results would be interesting!

i use both eyes depending on what i'm photographing. i use my left if i'm doing portraits, this way i dont have to stress by trying to keep one eye closed. my right eye will be covered by the camera body this way my left eye will be more focused. I use my right eye if i'm photographing sports so i can use my left eye as well to see whats going on around me.

Both, I use whichever eye gets me the viewpoint I want!

This is useful when taking awkwardly placed shots around corners and stuff, though I normally use my right eye.

There was a poll a while back, and if I remember, right-handed/left-eyed either won or was a lot more common than most people thought it would be.

I'm right-handed/left-eyed.

Wow, I guess I never even thought about some people using their right eye. The left seems so much more natural, but I am left eye dominant, although I didn't realize it until I learned to shoot the M-4 a couple years ago.

I never really thought about it. But now that I think about it, its nearly impossible for me to use my left eye.

I shoot weapons right eye and shoot camera right eye as well.
I am military, and have tried to train left eye, just in case, but for the life of me, I just cant naturally fire left eye. Even to sit here and close my right eye and read a computer screen is weird. But I have perfect vision in both eyes.

skygod44

Right-eyed, but I also keep the left one kinda opening and closing to keep an eye on what's going on...

NickSimcheck

I'm left hand/eyed and so therefor I always use my left. I tend to hold the camera low and tilt my head on an angle so that I can see over the camera on the right side.

snyderman

Left, and I'm finally seeing a bit of an upside to this. When shooting basketball with camera vertical, my RIGHT eye sees the action coming up the court, passes being made and where bodies are going on the court.

Other than that, I have a really smudged up view screen on the back of my camera!

This question sounds familiar...

At this point I am wondering, why is this a topic of such curiosity? It never would have occurred to me to ask. I just used whichever eye feels right and would assume others did the same. So MDJAK, for about a billion opinions on the topic, just cruise through the threads below.

(Oh, by the way, not nearly as much snark in this post as the last time I posted it. Maybe I'm getting old! And next time someone posts this same question, they will bump you off the top of the list!)

For me it depends on what I am doing. If I am shooting in the studio I tend to put my right eye to the camera. When I am shooting sports I tend to put my left eye to the view finder and keep my right eye open to look around...sounds strange but it works for me.

Some interesting yet useless related facts: Each eye feeds both sides of the brain: the right visual field of each eye runs to the left side of the brain while visual stimulation from the left visual field of each eye is routed to the right side of the brain. However, the retina processes a great deal of information before it is sent to the brain, including motion detection, light, edge detection, contrast, and color. The right side of our body is controlled by the left side of our brain while the left side of our body is controlled by the right side of the brain.

With right eye used to aim the camera, the left eye can help you to avoid someone who is about to walk absent mindedly into you, becasue you can see around the shorter side of the body. On the sidelines of a game, it can keep falling players from landing on you and hurting you or your gear, or keep you from and your gear from being hit by a flying ball (been there, done all that... at football game coverage and basketball game coverage) . Turn the camera to portrait orientation, and again the left eye can see around the top of the body when you rotate the body counterclockwise (the correct direction, as exemplified by the battery grip supplemental buttons falling to hand for right hand control!)

Use of the left eye to aim means that the right eye is always largely obscurred by the body.

Just the practical side of the issue!

No, I am too nice to tell you where to stick it!

 Just messin' with ya, too

BTW, I have indeed been run over by a hurtling defensive team football player, but I was shooting a 4x5 press camera for our newspaper (super fast, super grainy film) to cover night games. It was too big to really let you see around it. He was 'on our side', picked me up, and apologized profusely during the ride home on the team bus...our defense was unscored upon that season, so that gives you an idea of the size of these guys. I learned to shoot with an open eye very rapidly after that, when I covered games with 135 format gear!

I'm right handed, and I started shooting with my left eye and never looked back, so to speak. Most of the people I learned to shoot with/from use their right eye, so there was a period of time I questioned it. It just feels may more natural, and I feel like I have more control and vision using my left eye.

Another practical side for using the left eye: when using the left eye, your body will block most of the surroundings near your right eye. Then you don't need to shut your other eye and have horrible facial expressions during the shooting, but can keep open both eyes nice and relaxed.
When using the right eye the surroundings just drive me nuts when not closing the left one.

So left one = more focused (besides more natural) to me.
