I was wondering wich of these two pictures people like better and why. all comments are welcome as I"m still learning!

definitely the closeup. i would actually rather see the boat even closer to create a foreground and a background. the picture is too hard to folow, too much going on logs, boat, water, close trees far trees, fog. its all here. you need soem more color saturation as it looks slightly washed out. otherwise perfect :)

I would crop the top to remove the sky, probably down the level of the 2 pine trees on the left center. You would still have the foggyness in the background but not the white sky. It's a great shot, sorta a story telling picture.

I agree with a much tighter crop. For me the focal points are the canoe and the front/left log. Suggest moving the canoe, front to the left so you see the other side. This would give you better lead in lines to the water between the canoe and the log towards the lonely trees in the centre.
