The first photo is interesting in composition but your son is Oof. Try setting your camera to have a single point centre focus point. You can also try to use a lower fstop to give you less DoF.

Love the first one. You might try cropping the top down a bit so that it cuts off an equal amount of the spiral that's cut off below. I agree with Matt too - it's a tiny bit OOF.

#1's great... just the focus problem already mentioned. #2 captures a great expression, but it's not sharp, and the overall composition is such that it's clearly bound for the family album and not a stranger's wall. Not sure why it's not sharp: 16mm and 1/60s, f/3.5 on a PowerShot S3 with IS... I think it should be sharp unless you had way too much coffee, but then I don't know that camera. Cheers, Tony
