Lens was tokina 11-16 2.8. I had to crop it around the corners because there was a bit of chromatic noise. Whereas this is 25 ish mm on a crop camera, on the 5D it is a true 16. The crop gives it a 20 mm FOV, however.

10 second exposure
ISO 1000 (Though I have other shots of CLEAN 5000 ISO!)
Focal length of 16 mm
f/2.8,
no processing aside from crop.

out of this world! but why such high iso setting? well it wou;ve been something like a 50 second exposure, but so what? :)) I can see color noise in the darker parts of the frame... but the coolest thing with this shot is that the aurora can be completely oof and still look pretty much in a same incredibly beautiful way.

Really nice. I hope that I get a chance one of these days (actually, nights) to capture an aurora -- or just even get to see one.

My guess would be that because of the transient nature of the auroras that the result of a longer exposure would just be more smearing across the sky, but not necessarily brighter lights.

I was thinking about this as well, since aurora just doesn't stay still... Since I have never photographed one, let alone have ever seen one, the assumption about ISO settings was just an... assumption :)

Higher ISO - sharper aurora images. This baby can manage 6400 with no banding, I'm very impressed with its ISO capabilities.

I sold a print of this shot tonight for $100

Great rare captures...

Maybe just a tiny bit more tree line and horizon to accentuate the contrast, would balance the total image more... What do you think?

If you're interested in seeing more, be sure to check out my website under the category "Fine art" for a whole slew of them :)I'm afraid the website doesn't work all that well for me. First, I think it's a mistake to present only black and white thumbnails to begin with. Then if I click on an image, I don't get much more than a color version of the thumbnail, and worse it partially covers up the directions as to what I'm supposed to do to tell you which one I want. And the directions are misspelled anyway (its placement, not it's placement).

Fixed the typo.

That's unusual...for me when I click the thumbnail it opens a larger image (about 600x400, but larger than the thumbnail). Though the reason for the black and white thumbnails is it loads the show significantly faster than when you make them colored. Thanks for the critique, though, I'm hearing a lot of feedback on it. Some really love it, others hate it and suggest I change so and so or correct this typo and that typo (ever wonder why a lot of my posts have "edited" at the bottom of them? I suck at grammar :p). It's well appreciated, I'll look into other options.

I recently bought their premium account so I will be adding a shopping cart, soon, and learning how to work with other pages. I'm not advertising this site out too far until I can get those details taken care of.

Oh, I also made the thumbnails a bit larger; any better?

Edit1: Ah blast...I messed it up pretty bad...

Edit2: Okay its fixed and the thumbnails are bigger, the site loads a little slower but it's typo free and more organized.

Aargh, I am at work and my camera is at home. And the aurora season is rapidly ending. Great catch. And congrats on your new 5D. Hopefully it's warmer where you shoot now?
Today we had 3 seasons, spring, autumn and winter...So hopefully the summer will show up also :)
