One of the better ones we have taken at Pacific City on the Oregon Coast. Even caught a few surfers in the waves waiting for the "big" one to come along.

What do you think? Is this shot a "keeper"?

Comments welcome.

What kind of post processing did you do?

Just some of my regular processing of sunset/sunrise photos. I am just starting to learn a little about Photoshop so it is a contantly interesting process for me (working on post processing of photos we have taken). In this shot some cropping and post processing to bring the richness of the colors out that are already showing in the shot. A few layers/masks/blends. I love shots that the colors POP in.

Is that what you were wondering? ie what the original looked like compared to the finished upload.

That is amazing. Thank you for posting the originals along with a finished picture. Can you enlighten me on the steps you took in processing? (Layer and mask specifics?) I have a few shots like your originals that I would LOVE to play with.

Sure, no problem. Went and looked at your website and the photos on your website are 320x200 so I will make mine 320x just for you since you seem to have good enough vision that 320x200 is big enough to enjoy a photo, I don't have that good of vision so I have 1024x available on my website, big enough that people can see some detail in Ani's and my shots but still below 200Kb most of the time so I don't worry too much about anyone stealing them to print.

First is the .jpg @ 320x167
http://www.mrchevy.com/pc4adampender.jpg

A shot of how many layers there are:
http://www.mrchevy.com/pc4adampenderlayers.jpg

Next is the 400KB (the 800x file is 4.5MB in size) psd file so you can see all the layers and masks and toggle them on/off to see the changes they make. Just click on it, save it and open in Photoshop.

Thanks for the example! I appreciate the help with PS. I am new to all of this, as you can tell. I have been meaning to change the resolution on the site for a while now, but never quite got around to it (the original was kind of an arbitrary choice for size). I am going to get it on the short list of things to do, though. Thanks for the reminder.:)

Here is a 2.5MB file that is 800x that lets you see what is going on with the colors much better. Everyone feel free to download it and post process it and repost it here, it has all of the layers in it that you can change and/or delete. Enjoy.

Ken,
Is your title a typo? Is this an Atypical Oregon Sunset or A typical Oregon Sunset?

Dave,
I would say it is one of several a year we get that has that many colors in it, so it would be:

atyp•i•cal \(')À-"ti-pi-k€l\ adjective (1885)
: not typical : irregular, unusual

© 1996 Zane Publishing, Inc. and Merriam-Webster, Incorporate

correct?

Hi Ken, I got the gallery resized. I think there were some bugs in the transition, but most pictures seem to have transferred ok. Take another look and enjoy!

Looks much better. A few are still messed up, wrong size etc but only a couple. At least they are big enough my eyes can see them now.

Did you get the 2.5MB file and look at it? Much easier to see what the colors look like.

Awesome shot Ken, but I only have one gripe....

There's a bisecting line....(the horizontal line of clouds in the middle) Ahhh I dunno. It just seems to cut the picture right in half, and having an intense orange and cool blue on opposite sides of the line seems to bisect it even more.

Thank you! Glad you are enjoying some of my better shots, for every ½ way decent one there were many hundreds/thousands taken that weren't any good :( Sometimes I feel like I just started taking photos and using a computer last week and at other times like I have been doing it for a while.

Still learning, most of the time! Thank you for the comments, I appreciate them muchly Onwuma.

It's a great example of using layer masks, too. Why not post a tutorial in Post Processing?

Beautiful shot, maybe just a teenie bit oversaturated, even so it looks good the way it is. I tend to oversaturate my own pictures often but in this case it's welcome.

The way I hack at stuff I don't know if it would make a very good tutorial :D :D Quite a few enjoyed my tutorials on FM when I would post them, especially in the People forum on skin smoothing. ...but we will see. I am just learning how to use Photoshop a little bit.

Beautiful shots, It is definitely a keeper. Thanks Michael, glad you enjoyed it :)
