I have recently purchased 2 Lencarta Flash heads and have been practicing some portrait style head shots. I have been having trouble when occasionally and randomly all i get is a black shot. I have been using a shutter speed of 1/125 Sec, ISO 100 and various apertures.

First thought would be the triggering method, dodgy pc cable or low batteries if you use radio triggers.

If you post more details of your gears and setup, people can quickly help you narrow down the possible problems.

Ok thanks.
The trigger method is radio and is only 3 weeks old, although i don't know the battery state prior to purchase.

Also the flash triggers when this happens, so i guess the trigger will be working.

I really don't know about that but I would guess there's a timing delay or ahead of your shutter. This may cause by your radio trigger or the flash unit.
If you have a sync cord, you should try to link directly to your camera to see if it happens at all.
If direct link does not produce that, you can narrow down to the radio trigger.

I don't know about the Lencarta flash heads but the 50D manual says:
