Canon DSLR Speed Challenge #95 -
Family Gatherings

As we gathered with the family this Easter Sunday, it reminded me how precious family is. Having lost some dear family members last year and reconnecting with distant kin gave me the inspiration for this challenge. It could be a group shot, a single candid, or just catching the brother in law sneakin' a nap after a big meal...Be creative and have fun!

This photo wasnt the best, but I liked it and wanted to use it somehow, so I tried to make it look like an old B&W.

This competition is now officially closed. Thank you all for participating. As usual, the entries were creative and for the most part on topic. I found a little extra time today to comment on all the entries

BASmith: Been there myself! Wonderful candid. I like the isolation on the face (the BBQ sauce adds a funny touch) I wish it was a little sharper though especially the arm in the foreground.

TriggerMom: Welcome to POTN! Very nice first effort. I like how your title fits the image. It looks like the baby is having issues with the cookie

Chopper5654: Very nice. Crisp focus, good exposure though a bit contrasty, vibrant colors. A bit too centered for my taste. It would have been nice to see more of their faces, it looks like they were having a lot of fun.

athrasher: Right on topic for a family gathering. Interesting perspective in that every one is sitting far away from dear ol' dad. Is something going to jump out of that present? LOL! The image has a very homey feel to it. The WB is a bit off, but a nice image none the less

Flo: Also fits very nicely with the theme and the title is spot on. How many takes before you got everyone's attention Gail? LOL! It looks like every one is having a fine time though. Your entries always make me smile

airfrogusmc: As usual, a great image Allen. I love the separation that you get wide open yet, you can see the look of joy on both their faces. I'm amazed that Aunt Marg is happy with a pair of socks…

Lore: This treatment works well on this image Some of my most treasured family photos are old B&W's, all creased and some faded. The people in the picture rather than the picture itself... This is what your image brings to mind. Nice job

Kendoway: I like this one a lot Chris. The BG more blurry would accentuate them more. They look really happy. Do you have one of the the whole family? Having the whole family around them would make quite an impact. Excellent image just the same.

rawshorty: Nice image technically (panos are not that easy) Yet my first impression is that this isn't a family group, only a busy restaurant. Maybe if you had some of them looking in the direction of the camera.

Monty28428: Monty this one tugs at my heart and it evokes the feeling that life is precious and tomorrow is not guaranteed. The BG people are a bit distracting but the overall effect works and this is a "family"moment, sadly one of the last ones...

MSJGD: Your images are always outstanding Jean-Guy. This one is no exception. Excellent BG separation and rich, though not overly saturated colors. The traditional outfits really enhance the image. I'd like to know more of the story behind the picture.

Skrim17: Another image that evokes fond memories of family. The smiles on the grand kids are precious and grandpa seems proud of them…or is he just waiting on the cake and ice cream? Nice entry Crissa

Geno DM: Dang Geno...That 24mm almost isn't wide enough! This image brought an instant smile to my face. There is what, four maybe five generations there? I'm not surprised that a few are wearing name tags.Who could remember all those names…Straight forward shot but says a lot. Superb entry. I have to know…is that little fella with the blue shirt in the front row in the Witness Protection Program?

mikerault: Great capture Mike. The determined look on this little guy is precious and the other little guy has his eyes glued on that purple prize on the step. Should bring years of fond memories.

drchrisdvm2009: Nice entry. A very sweet moment. That would be on my mantelpiece if I had a fireplace. It looks as though "somebody" feels left out...

It was really tough to pick a clear winner among these great entries. After looking at these for hours on end and asking for help from my wife and son, I'm giving the nod to Monty's "Last Picture" for the reasons stated in my comments. This image tied together all the elements that I was thinking about. It is a sweet poignant reminder that life and kin are to be cherished.

Congrats Monty!

Ed, I have no idea how to even begin calculating the number of generations! We call it "The Cousin's Party" and have it every year. All those people are related to me on my mom's side. One of them is my only surviving uncle (he's not the oldest in the photo) and his wife, my brother and his family, first cousins, second cousins and probably some third plus all the varying degrees of removal. Just my first cousins vary in age from 75 to 30 so there's a big range there. Italians know how all this works. :-)
