View Full Version : Raw Judo or JPG?

I will be attending a local judo tournament at the weekend, I can get close enough to the action and will be using a canon S70. As the hall is lit with (i think) tungsten lamps I thought shooting raw files would be safer, but are there any speed drawbacks? especially if the camera is set on it's "rapid fire" setting.
I am taking photos for members of a club I belong to, so it's far from professional but it would be nice to capture some good action if possible

I can't help you with specifics on the speed of RAW with the S70, but you can work it out yourself quite easily. Switch the camera to JPG maximum speed, hold the shutter down for 10 seconds, and see how many photos it does, then do the same with RAW. Next do a test where you take, say, 1 photo per second in RAW then in JPG, and see if the camera seems more responsive in either mode. It's not scientific, but if you don't notice a big difference then shoot RAW. As you know the main advantage is RAW will give you the ability to tweak the white ballance later, and if you want to crop or edit the images you'll be working from higher quality files.
Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot, when I get home from work, camera and stopwatch will be working in unison
:) I will post the results here

:D:D Tim has the answer to the "How do I take a pic of a Grebil in a parachute " question! "you can work it out yourself quite easily."
More people should try that. ;-)
Trefor, you're right, shooting raw files would be safer. Especially in this case, I wouldn't do it any other way. Try to anticipate & pick your shots, instead of shotgunning, & the write speed shouldn't be a big issue.

I knew it was a pretty dumb question :o
But I have done the scientific question, with daughter dancing in the kitchen and jpegs are a little quicker than raw.
However I will take your advice and go for raw when I shoot on Sunday, luckily I have been watching both my kids (black and blue belts) doing judo for years so I should be able to anticipate some of the action.
If i get a decent result i will post :)

trefor, I wasn't trying to say that it was a dumb question. Just that I think we learn more by experimenting to find an answer. Digital makes so many things easier than when we had to wait for images to be processed, that I wonder why more people don't do it.

No, I love the comments on the forums, and I am learning to think for myself:) Only had the canon a couple of weeks and still working my way through the manual, took a couple of shots in south Wales I liked but don't know how to show them on this site. As you said the beauty of digital is that mostly mistakes don't cost!
By the way, looked at your site, awesome shots, I especially like the Tigerlily (42), beautiful.
Keep up the good work

I knew it was a pretty dumb question :o
The only dumb question is the question that's not asked.
Or as Mr Mackay (I think) on SouthPark said, "there no such thing as stupid questions, just stupid people" ;) :D

I liked but don't know how to show them on this site. I looked for specific info & it seems pretty well hidden!
Several ways to do it for a Post: one of these will put the pic or link in the text anywhere you choose.
1. If the image is online, Rt-click on it & choose “Copy image location”
In the post, goto “Go Advanced” at the replies area.
Above the replies box, click on the little yellow (box with the mountains) “Insert Image” icon. Paste in your link.

2. If the image is online, Rt-click on it & choose “Copy image location”
Type pasteyourimagelinkhere then type so it looks like this with no spaces:
http-etc.jpg
3. Or, just copy the link to the image in the text as in http-etc.jpg This won't show the image, just provide the link.
4. This will put the pic at the end of the post.
In the post, goto “Go Advanced” at the replies area.
At the bottom you’ll see “Attach Files”. Click on “Manage Attachments”, and navigate (Browse) to where the pic is on your hard drive. Find it & click
“Upload”, & you’re done. Remember, you get only 2 pics this way, max size is 800ppi & 100KB each.
I'm glad you liked the shots, trefor. The cars are my favorites.
