I have read in this forum people talking about their hacked Rebel. What does “hacked” mean? It may be a common term to most people, but I don’t know what it is.

It means that the firmware has been modified to enable features that the hardware supports but that Canon did not enable in the firmware.

The "wasia" hack is tried and tested, I did it myself, and it's useful. There's a new one, "undouchables", i've read of a few people with problems and some that were fine, you always hear about problems rather than sucesses.

Undouchables? Sound a bit toilet related

I have the Undutchables hack and no problems. If there are problems then you can put the original Canon firmware back on.

How then does one go about installing it? I am going to assume through the memory card but I am curious. I know a search on here will direct me to some yahoo groups etc...

While I have my hands full completely understanding what I have - and don't find ISO 1600 pictures all that useful nevermind what the ISO 3200 pics would look like - I am curious

1. How is it installed?
2. How can you reload the old hardware?

Thanks...

Is there a difference between the Undutchables and Wasia hacks? I use the Wasia hack with no problems but will switch if there is an advantage. thanks.

Do a quick search...there is a lot written about this...apparently they have successfully unlocked AI SERVO.

1) In the exact same way as official canon updates. The firmware update is copied onto a blank CF card. When the camera is turned on it detects the file and asks if you'd like to update. If you do it then spends a while replacing the existing firmware with the version on the card.
2) You are not changing any hardware. But to reload the previous or any other firmware you just do the exact same thing described in 1).

I did and found it. Thanks. However, I could find nothing about AI Servo being functional. I'll stick with the Wasia hack until there are substantial changes.

Nope, just another work around. (so far)

Ok, now the Wasia hack. How will that help? What are some of the things it opens on the firmware? I am deciding if I should update my firmware.

The hacks add several functions - the three I find most useful are:

1) Ability to turn Artificial Intelligence (AI) Focus off
2) Ability to select 1/200 fixed flash sync speed
3) Ability to use Flash exposure compensation
4) Ability to use mirror lock-up

OK - so I have four favorites - forgot about the flash sync speed! You can also change some button function settings and pick smaller JPEG's to accompany your RAW files to squeeze more photos on your cards. Overall a great free upgrade!!

I installed the Undutchables hack on my new Drebel yesterday night. I know that the new features work. But does one see a different firmware version after the hack? Mine still shows 1.1.1.

So I got a question for you all with the UnDutchable hack...

- How do you like it?
- How many people are having problems with it, if any?
- What do you use most?

Any input you guys have would be awesome, I'm just a little bit leary about installing it on my DReb.

Thanks!
Miles

I was a little wary of installing a hack on my 300D, but in the end installed the UnDutchables 0.2.3, and was really pleased with it. The most useful function for me was FEC, which is accessed by pressing the left arrow key when in shooting mode.

It was painless to install, and 'did what it said on the tin' - the custom functions were a little scary, but in fact aren't - it's just a slightly funny way of having a load of extra settings - some of which are enabled with the hack, and some of which aren't. Download the pdf with all the info in to check.

I have the hack and I find it useful, especially with the mirror-lockup as I do alot of macro work. At first I was a bit uneasy about installing a hacked firmware onto my camera but late one night I decided to just go for it, have not had any regrets at all.

Cool, thanks guys.

Overall, I feel like most people are happy with it, so I think when my 550EX arrives, I'll install it. I definitely want to get the FEC.

I installed the original Wasia hack when it came out and the upgrades. Same for the Undutchables.

All have worked as promised, the addition of FEC and expanded ISO are the main advantages for me.

No problems installing, no glitches using. You can always flash back to the original at a later date.

Just follow the instructions carefully and do the flash (hack or official) with a full battery or AC adpater.

The only possibility of disaster would be from having the camera battery go flat part way through the process. This would be an issue with either official upgrade software or hack.

ok, it's installed
and i took a test photo

as it was 'previewed' i can usually deleted it straight away by pressing the trash button, right arrow, and 'set'.

NOW it won't do it, it says "AF 05"

what the HELL is AF 05? is that a function that the firmware has replaced the right arrow with?
:(

sorry, my bad. you just hit the erase button, then set
no need to goto 'ok', it's already there

anyone downloading it - i strongly suggest downloading the PDF file and reading thru it

can someone explain to me all this mumbo jumbo about AF, AI, etc etc.. i don't get it, at all..
in really, really, lamens terms please haha

Basically, AI is servo focus, so it will continue to track what you're focussing on - with AF, it's one shot, so will focus on what you point it at, then beeps, and then locks.

Also, it took me ages to find out that to set Flash Exposure Compensation, hit the left arrow, and then select (that was actually the most useful for me).

:(The PDF documents this... "AF 05" is actually "AF OS" and stands for auto-focus, one-shot. To delete right away, hit "trash" then "set". No need for right-arrow.

yeah thanks guys, i've figured it all out :D

the only thing i find which MIGHT be a bit off, is that once you install the hack
the whole camera runs a tad slower.
it takes a good 3 seconds to turn on and change from ther EOS led to the function display

and I FEEL the focus is a bit more of a b***ch.
it just seems to work less in low lit conditions.

over all i'm fairly happy with the hack

Matt - which hack did you install? I installed Undutchables on my 300D (when I had it), and didn't notice any kind of a slow down.
