Here's a thought for how Canon may be getting close to the release of a new Camera, now you'll have to stay with me on this as I need to put a little analogy forward first.

I think we all know who or what Cisco is, probably the largest manufacturer of Networking equipment and when they bring out a major new piece of networking kit it comes out reasonably priced and the price of the kit it's due to replace goes up in price, this is to encourage sales in the new technology.

Now in terms of Canon, I'm seeing similar activity, for a while now I've been saving toward getting a 1DMk3 and was getting close to the magic £2,000 ish mark, then the 5DMk2 came out and was priced similar to that of the 1DMk3. Now over the last few months the 1DMk3 has gone up in price to over £3,000 now where as the 5DMk2 has had its price remain pretty much static.

Canon will be hoping that people who were wanting a 1DMk3 will now go and buy a 5DMk2, a camera with new gizmos, more up to date technology, rather than the long in the tooth, due a upgrade/replacement 1DMk3

There will come a point, I think in the not so distant future, that sales of the 5DMk2 will reach the saturation point Canon want to achieve and it is then that Canon will announce the 1DMk3 successor.

The replacement 1DMk3, whatever it will be called, being priced very close to that of what the 5DMk2 is priced currently, again to encourage sales in the new model.

Or it could all be due to currency fluctuations.

That would be my guess. The yen has been hammered pretty hard and prices for everything across the Canon lineup has gone up quite a bit. As to the 5D price staying the same, it's the same story. It's a new body and the price should e dropping as the first wave of folks who want it so bad that they are willing to pay the premium are drying up and the price needs to be lowered to get that next wave to jump in.

From most of the posts I've read here in the past couple of months my guess is that it's also due to currency fluctuations as Nortelbert and Gjl711 have said. Nice analogy but it's likelier the simpler explanation.

When Canon brings out a the successor to the 1D mk3 I highly doubt it will be anywhere near the price of the 5D mk2. I also failed to see them priced closely over here. The 5D mk2 hit the gate at 2600 ish USD and the 1D mk3 has been just under 4000 USD as far as I can really remember. ( SA warning) If Canon does bring out a new camera I believe it will be either a rebel ( T1i ) or an entirely new line ( XS ) that is more affordable during the current economic times.

I do with they would bring out a new 1D though so I could afford the mk3:D
