Hello:
I have a powershot A20 and when I updated my operating system to XP, my USB port suddenly did not work anymore. I couldn't get the computer and the camera to "see" eachother. So I went to the Canon website and they suggested that I download an update for the port. I did that, but I still cannot get the computer to recognize the camera. The update did not work. Not only that, but I can't find anywhere on the Canon website to contact a representative. I even still have the box and instruction manual from the camera, and there isn't even a '1-800' number on any of it! I am going nuts because this has been going on a long time, and I cannot afford to buy a new camera. Besides, the A20 works great for what I use it for. But it has been months since I could download my photos to my computer! I just found this forum, and I am sure hoping that someone out there can help me out with this problem.

Thanks,
-Amy

Did you download the WIA driver for the A20? XP (and Me, but you don't want to go there) requires this rather than the TWAIN driver that earlier versions of Windows used.

Hi Amy,

Is it just the camera not working or anything that is attached to that USB port?
You could try another gadget, maybe a card reader, if nothing works then the problem is not with Canon or the camera, but with either the computer or XP:)

Do you only have one USB port? It is possible that it needs to be enabled in the bios, if the USB port is on a PC card you could try it, booting into windows, close down and power off, reseat pc card, reboot and see if Windows sees it this time. This can be very trial and error, but hopefully a problem you can fix without spending money

Try Jon's advice first. If that doesn't work then you can try the two things listed below.

Windows XP.... Go to the Device Manager in Windows and remove the USB port from the hardware list. Then reboot the computer and let Windows XP re-install the drivers for the USB port. That should get the port working properly again.

Plug in your camera and let Win XP setup the proper drivers.

That usually works for me, hope it helps you as well.

Another trick is to go to the Device Manager, select USB Root Hub (there may be more than one), and then go to the tab that reads "Power Management". Uncheck the box that reads "Allow The Computer to Turn Off this Device to Save Power".

By the way, if you live in the U.S. or Canada, the support number is 1-800-OK-CANON.
