I'm a freelance portrait photographer and I'm trying to get better. I'm learning but until I can go to school I was wondering if there were any good books I should read that could help me. Any ideas?

Two books that I found immensely helpful and informative when I was more absorbant. ;)
And...if you're into that sort of thing. I love her book.

Thank you! Yes I mostly do a children photography and as hard as it is I love it! Do you think I'd be able to find those books at the library? I havn't been there in a while and I forget if you can get just about any book at the library LOL!

Hm, couldn't tell you. I haven't been to a library in a while. The Lackey book just came out last month, so I doubt it.

I checked my local library and wasn't able to find that particular book but I found a dozen other books on the photography of children. I simply went onto my library's website and typed in "children photography." My library system is relatively small so I'm sure a larger system would have an even more extensive collection.

Yes my library had the 2nd and 3rd book. They were both checked out but they put me on the waiting list. I'm 5th in line for the 2nd one and 8th for the 3rd... but oh well LOL! I couldn't find any on child photography but I got one called "Exposure and lighting for the digital photographer" So far it's just been blabbing about the difference between digital and film photography... I'm hoping it'll pick up soon.

Wow, eighth in line? Almost worth buying the book. Is your birthday coming up soon or something? Good luck! I hope your exposure book gets more interesting.

Not so far. I'm starting to think I'm just going to look at what chapters I want tp read and just read those. I just had my birthday in Jan but maybe I'll mention it for mothers day.

Exploring the light - Rick Sammons new book is a good all around, helpful book. Very practical.
Definitely check this website. Neil van Niekerk is about to publish a lot of this in a book but has made his web pages printer friendly. http://www.planetneil.com/tangents/

The moment it clicks- Joe Mcnally.. loved that book.. its a combination of technical aproach to make certain pictures and how stuff works in the photography buisness and how certain of his famous pictures came to be.. the story behind them.. very interesting..
