Hello all, I have show this images before, but my previous account was deleted?
Anyway, I'm newbie, this shots are from last year, but I want to show them to all of you.
This images are from Sony Ericsson K770 and Samsung Omnia, they are edited with photoshop (basic tools), and they are stitched shots to have this "wide" look.

I remember you from before, and you had all of these same shots before, didn't you? Nothing new from your camera phone?

Was there anything lacking from the critiques you received last time that you wanted help with? Any particular concerns? Or new photos you want critiqued?

Hello guys again. Yes, I have some new photos, but I don't remember which of them I showed here, so have a look: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gam3ra/
Also, I have bought Canon A590IS :)
I made this topic again, because the older one is DELETED (as my profile, dunno why), and I think is worth watching them. I'm better skilled "photographer" now, beware!
Sorry for bad english, and YES, they are from phones.

These are my latest shots with the new Canon A590IS, they are from "test" trip.

No doubt these are nice shots. All I can say is that I look 'cooler' with my gear taking pictures!

Nice camera phone work! Too bad there are not many in phone HDR programs-- I did find one app in iphone-- anyone use any?

I do like shots 1, 3, 4, & 5. I find it hard to believe that they came from a camera phone, but photoshop can do some wonders.

Keep up the good work

Matt.

Assuming that that doesn't negate the invitation to critique implicit in use of the forum, and starting from your recent work in post #8:

8/1: The lighting and colours are quite flat. You have a brighter areas of cloud at the top right hand side, attracting attention, and leading the viewer's eye out of the image. You have placed neither the top nor the bottom of the mountain range at a compositionally pleasing height through the image: I suggest studying the Rule of Thirds to begin with. In this image, the sky is relatively uninteresting, so should have been given the top third of the frame. There is a lot of potentially interesting mid-ground, but it's being hidden by the hill sloping away - a higher elevation may have helped, but admittedly probably wasn't available. The rocks, buildings, and trees at each side can also lead the eyes out: particularly the tree at left, and the barely-included rock or tree stump in the extreme foreground at right. The image comes across as quite busy in the end.

8/2: The lighting in this is just totally out of control. Looks like a bodged use of tone mapping. Might work as a "the aliens are landing" image, but doesn't work as a realistic photo nor artwork in my opinion.

There's actually some better composed and lit work in your earlier posts, but I hope you're enjoying your new camera and getting whatever you want out of it.

Cheers, Tony

Thanks, the 2nd photo is test with the dynamic potential of the RAW in A590IS. Its shooted throught the sun, when I edited the photo I like it (compositionally).
About the 1st image - I wanted the tree to be in the image, surely higher possition of me will be better. I think the sky is getting the color balance of the image more likely. I know about the rule of thirds, but in this scene I don't get good result when try it.

Wow, these images are fantastic (quality-wise) for a camera phone. The third image is my favorite because it has a "quiet, taking a stroll in the woods on a misty morning" mood.

Those new ones are pretty good. Are you still stitching together multiple images using your camera (like you did with the camera phone) or are these just single images?

RuffLeS
17th of April 2009 (Fri), 00:04
justincase724 - from one and cropping. I'm lazy to shoot for panorama with this camera, because I will need to stich the RAW files (JPEG is SO washed out, especially the shadows areas), but they need to be edited (white balance, etc...)
I need WIDE camera with good DOF for landscapes, but will not give 1000$ for this... Maybe I will upgrade to Canon 350D + 18-55IS. Canon A590IS is not so much difference with my cameraphone, only that it has manual controls and RAW, but the quallity is pretty much the same

griptape - I'm not so good with Photoshop, than you think. When I open the RAW I just play with the sliders to match my needs, then some Levels, Selective Colors (again sliders) and thatsit. The first image is almost the same as original JPG, the second image is with hardened black level, its shootet through the sun.

what's funny is the Canon shots are noisier than the camera phone's.

RuffLeS
17th of April 2009 (Fri), 01:59
Thats because the shots of the phone are ~10 images, stiched to one, that is BIG resolution, even fron 3MP phone. When resized to 1000x800 the noise and artifacts are GONE :) And you know what noise reduction have the phones... And the photos from A590IS are from RAW, that camera is noisy even at ISO80 (8MP 1/2.5")

The macro shot doesn't quite work for me, but almost. It's sort of a semi-macro, I guess. The mossy rock is nice but leads the eye into a clump of mostly out-of-focus sedum. The background is busy, too, so I think you really need to get the subject foreground sharp to set it apart. I like these kinds of shots even though capturing them often entails lying in the dirt. ;)

There is always somebody who don't believe it. So PLEASE tell me WHERE to upload big images (or files, I can rar them) and which of the photos you will like to see in full size? My latest shot are from A590IS, btw. Which is not good, too.
Please post critique, I'm not posting here for "album" or "hey, look what cool pics I have", I need comments about composition of them, what to avoid, what you like in the shot... :)

If that's the case, you'd have done well to post your photos without reference to the equipment, rather than deliberately provoking all the "ooh aah" responses about camera phones... :p. Cheers, Tony

tonydee

In that last image, all your verticals are leaning backwards because you've not held the camera horizontally. There are busy parts at the left and right edges of the image that draw the eye and - for not being complete comfortably inside the image - take the eye out of the image. The post in the middle is centred (generally don't want dominant things centred) and very distracting. And the amount of road shown on left vs right is very imbalanced... the road is lighter than the grass, so the combination of grass and buildings makes the centre-right side of the image very heavy, and the image feel lop sided. There's also some blown areas on the white building... obviously pretty harsh light to be shooting in, with shadows not showing any detail. I'm not a big fan of the gradation in the sky... pushes the eye downwards out of the sky uncomfortably, and of course the sky itself is pretty uninspiring, but that's just the luck of the draw.

Cheers,
Tony

EXIF data can be easily edited, so it really provides no proof of anything.

I've seen lots of people on CC who've improved massively in just a few months through passion, attentiveness to feedback, experimentation, observation, introspection, reading etc.. I'm not trivialising what comes with a proper degree in photography and years of experience, but getting it 95% right isn't such a stretch for most people. If you can follow each point, decide what rings true for you, throw away the rest, remember next time you're shooting... it's an upward spiral. No reason amateurs can't aspire to achieve a professional standard of results - sometimes we even have an advantage: freedom from commercial time pressure and accountability.

Cheers, Tony

If like you said, its a combination of over 10 images, then I can see it being a really huggge. I did some simple maths, and the originals would be 8000 pixels by 4500 pixel !!

Shrinking an image THAT large, after removing noise on a pixel level on photoshop, to a width of less than 1000 pixel, would indeed remove all the noise and imperfections.

Thanks for giving us such a great tips! :D Now I know with some rather heavy PS stitching, I can shoot high quality photos even with my cameraphone lol. Its gonna be a heck of a job tho to PP each one of them.

RuffLeS
13th of May 2009 (Wed), 12:42
You do not need to remove noise, with that kind of resolution, downsized to 1000px its not verry visible ;)
