Instead of writing my essay for English, I decided to make/photograph California rolls. :D (procrastination rocks...for the most part)
I didn't have a light box (or w/e they are called), so I put a bunch of printer paper everywhere and placed the rolls next to a window for light. I also used a piece of aluminum foil to reduce the shadows on the left.
Here they are:

I really like the second picture. It looks like you shot it with the graphic in mind which fills the frame nicely.

a little too bright, i'd say. not enough contrast with all the whites.

I like this a lot, especially the second one! It is very tough to do white on white (even though there are some other colors in this). The whites are nice and there is good separation between the grains of rice. Reminds me of my white on white and black on black assignments I had to do for my photography class. I used a 4x5 camera, which is tons of fun! If I ever get a chance to set up my own dark room, I would definitely get me a 4x5 camera!

i love them, they could use a little DOF to really make them pop but otherwise i think it's a great first attempt.

Delicious photos. The whites are generally good as said, but another place where they just miss is the top surfaces of the crab-themed (not sure how much crab's really in them ;-)) sticks... nice to see the grooves in the layers. To keep a really upbeat bright overall image, could fine-tune these things on a one-by-one basis... easier for the closer up second shot of course. I'd rather not see the plate outline in the first. I'm not sure why - might just be the brightness or natural contrasts involved - but somehow they don't "feel" sharp to me. Nice work overall though. Cheers, Tony

Second composition is sweet.I agree about lack of contrast though?
This may be too dark for you..http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/emmaloudawg/delectable21.jpg

That really highlights - no, it unhighlights - oh whatever... it shows the detail that was hidden before! With awareness of that, could edge the brighter more unbeat version towards it. Hey, there are reflections too... groovy :-).

Ahh, thanks for the comments/critiques. Flo, your edit makes the rice a bit dark, but I like how you brought out the detail in the other things, especially the reflections. :)
I would like to say again that I really do appreciate the responses.

Slightly too bright for my tastes. Having a hard time actually distinguishing the actual food from the plate. But nice work overall.

Flo, your edit makes the rice a bit dark It looks good in color managed Firefox3. Those of you not using color management will see a darker, more contrasty image. See my Sig.

I like Laffctx's edit above, but these are pretty strong shots. More DoF would be nice too.
I always judge food photos by how hungry they make me, and these are making my stomach growl.

Thanks for the edit Laffctx, it's a bit dark (just a teeny tiny bit on my monitor) but I definitely like the increased saturation.
...and these are making my stomach growl.
I'm glad to hear that :D
