front lense cap while you're shooting? Do you have a handy place to keep the darn thing so you do not have to search for it when you're through?

I always put it in my back left pocket, that way I know where it is if I need to quickly change lenses. Sometimes at home I spend a few seconds working out where I put it down, only to realise that i've done what I usually do and stuck it in that pocket ;)

I usually put it somewhere and promply loose it. Actually I usually put it in my pocket...now which pocket was that again?? I know I put it here somewhere. Haven't lost one yet, but I have to wear clothes with less pockets.

I just put it in my pocket; I've tried the little cap keeper gadgets before that keep it attached to the lens by a little "leash" and they just get in the way.

Usually my left pants pocket. I tend to hang onto the camera with my right hand and remove the lens cap with my free (left) hand. The left pocket is closest.

I tried the goofy cap keeper too. Shirt pocket works best for me, since just about every shirt I own has a pocket. Hmm...gotta look into that.

I also put the lens cap in my back left pocket. Its easier.
Once again with right hand holding camera and switching it on, left hand has the cap off and pocketed!

shirt pocket. If the shirt has no pocket, then a pants pocket. I like the carpenter pants since they have those cool side pockets specifically made for 77 mm lens caps.

Tom, carpenter pants are so 2003 hahaha.
I just use any pocket, but I have lost one lens cap so far, sometimes I have a brain cramp and leave it on a table or somthing, luckily it has been there when I went back for it, I realy need to break that habit.

Yes, but I'm so 1983 so they are like a bold fashion statement to me. Plus, they actually fit comfortably.

Back left pocket! HA! Everyone knows that the left FRONT pocket is where the lens cap goes.
Just kidding :) Seems like many of the simple threads lately have gone this route. :)

One of those goofy cap keepers hooked to the camera strap - a concession to my wife who also uses the camera. If I could afford some good glass I'm sure the cap wouldn't fit.:D:lol:

Left shirt pocket. Always.
If it isn't there, then I have to retrace my steps to the last place that I shot, and it will be laying on the ground there.

Find out where the careless people live, follow them, wait for them to put their lens caps down and collect them. You then need never worry about losing yours. I have a heap of lighters and pens and rubber bands. I never, ever buy them. Why doesn't this universal law apply to camera lens caps or 1Ds mk IIs?

Precisely. My lens experiences about 3 seconds of life 'unprotected' and then is fitted with its UV filter, which stays in place unless I need to swap for polarizer.
I was shooting a baseball game, and a foul tip came flying right at me. I naturally started pivoting my body to shield my camera, but the ball clipped my lens, and I heard a sickening 'tinkle' sound of glass as the ball careened off my lens. Fortunately, it cracked the UV, but my 135mm lens was unharmed.

Having grown up in Buffalo, NY, I visited Canada frequently. I can attest to the fact that (at least back then) Canadian "fashion" was about 10 years behind the US. :) Never being a slave to fashion--or as my wife puts it, even being AWARE of fashion--cargo shorts are great for a photo-outing. Same concept as the photo vest, and less conspicuous (except to the fashionistas among us).

I'm not too keen on fashion either - which is obvious to most who see me. A pocket T-shirt, carpenter's jeans, and a photographer's vest are the perfect ensemble for all occasions as far as I'm concerned.

I, too, went through the "which damn pocket did I put that thing in?" stage for a while. Then I decided to try a different strategy--since which time I haven't had to spend a lot on replacement caps!
I've been using a LowePro S&F system for a few years now, so when I'm out with my gear I'm usually carrying either a shoulder bag of some description on my left side, or, if I'm travelling light, I'm wearing one of their belts. I keep a slip-lock pouch attached to the end of the bag closest to my left hand, or on the belt at my left hip. Filters and rocket blower go in the pouch, lens caps slip into the mesh pocket on the front.

Lots of clothing articles have pockets, but very few have pockets large enough for zoom lenses.
A really bad photographer's vest has about 15 pockets on it, but none of them are large. A better photographer's vest has only about six big ones.

Good lork, my vest has 21 pockets. 21!!! But 3 or 4 or them are quite large. I'm not sure what to label it as.
I've seen a couple of really nice vests out there with padded pockets for lenses - that would be a nice feature IMHO.

But the best kinds have about 6 big external pockets and an equal number of internal pockets, too. Once you put something in one of these pockets, you know it'll be safe. AAMOF, the real challenge is not in knowing where you put the item because you can determine that just by feeling for it, but in getting it out of the correct pocket. I think IanD still has an order of poutine in one of his vest pockets from the last GCPS.

So, do you release the shutter button with your left hand? ???
I saw this photographer on TV one time, shooting at Ground Zero after Sept. 11, and that's how he worked the camera. Camera held with the right hand and shutter released with the left. And the camera was the standard right-handed (as if there's any other type) camera. I was wondering if he was somehow right hand challenged.

I always have it strapped around my neck for the "most" secure hold. That way, i can remove the lens cap with either hand and eat my quarter-pounder with cheese in the other http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/tongue3.gifhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/tongue3.gifhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/tongue3.gif

Hehe. No. I still shoot with my left hand, but I mean when I'm just holding my camera and I need to free a hand, I use my right, because I'm right handed. That, and I feel it's more secure holding the base/lens with my left than having the mount support the lens with my right.
Unless of course, it's the nifty fifty, then I don't mind, it's so light anyway!

Like Belmondo, I have developed the habit of removing the cap with my left hand while holding the camera ready to shoot in my right. The cap goes easiest into the left side (front?) pocket.
Another habit that came about in a time when pants did not fit so loosely - I put the cap in my pocket with the outside (front) against my leg (really). There were many cases of condensation developing on the inside of the cap because my leg would sweat and the cavity in the cap was 'sealed' against my leg. If the cap is placed on the lens with condensation on the inside it can transfer to the front of the filter or front element. Sometimes you don't even know it until you look at the shot and wonder why its soft in the middle.
Have Fun,

I put it into the camera bag or an outer pocket of whatever bag I'm carrying. Never felt it was a problem. Only almost lost it once in the forrest. Hadn't zipped up the bag so it fell out when I leant down.
