If it's a 20d, try the iso button, then press the shutter half way and see if it's off.

I never worked that out either, usually I turned the camera off and on to clear it. I'll try it too :)

Thanks for the tip.... I've accidentally locked it before too.

on the rebel it disappears after 6 secs of not touching any button. faster than restarting. :)

If you point the camera somewhere else and press the "*" button again, doesn't it re-evaluate the exposure immediately? I think that's the way it works on the 10D...

i just played with it and if you take the desired exposure reading and just press the AE lock button again, it recomposes immediately and locks on the new reading. try pointing at various lighting and keep pushing the ae lock button, it will keep locking to various exposures.

As I recall there's a timer that starts when you take your finger off the shutter button. I've been caught the other way round :-(. Lock exposure with *, recompose, and by the time you come to take the photo the exposue lock is lost. Grrrrr.

Why do you need to cancel it? If you want to lock exposure from another spot, just press it again and then take your picture.

i just hit it on accident and would prefer the active metering instead of having to press it again.

Yes, it does work. Just press the "AF Point Selector" button twice. This is the button directly right of the AE lock button "*"

Caesars0331works, or just flick the scene dial one click and back again. You can do that with your right thumb without taking the camera away from your eye.
