Well.... in the last few monthes I decided to get into photography a little bit.
Baught a G6 (already had an A80 ) then I baught some lenses for it. Started doing research on the net and I liked the 350 XT.
Well I baught that on our family vacation. Now I want lenses......and so on and so on!!( $3000 later in the last few monthes.)
Damn...this is a expensive hobby and I still use auto most of the time.
Well I"m having fun and you only live once.
Thanks for the help everyone and all the help I will need in the future!!

Yes it is. As a pro its just an expense you have to live with and its is a BIG expense, but as a hobby it's even worse, since the only reward is the art.
You could have been worse off, you could have been a racing junky..........I need rehab hahaha.

You know it!! lol If it wasn't expensive it wouldn't be near as much fun as it is. I got started a few years ago with an Olympus C700 with 10X optical zoom - I told the wife that "we" needed it for our California vacation. Then I took tons of pics our son & daughter & their high school sports - soccer, tennis, and softball. I made it a tradition that I would make a CD of all of the pictures I took (I take them of everyone on the team) and give them to all of their teammates and coaches to remember each other & their season. Now I've graduated to a drebel with the kit lens, a 50mm 1.8, and a 70-300 IS zoom. I justify my expenses by the feeling that I get by thinking of the joy the kids can have with a CD full of memories. To me that's what makes it worthwhile. :)

I just went thru the camera bag in search of my spare battery for the 300D. I found 7 unexposed rolls of 35mm film (there is no film in either one of the film bodies). At $8 a roll to buy and process that's $56. On vacation we would generally shoot 20-25 rolls of film or $160 - $200 worth. Since mid January 2005 we have taken 1600 pictures with the 300D or 40 rolls? That's $320 in processing we've saved so far this year. And we haven't taken a vacation yet this year. This isn't costing me money, it's saving me money. Big time.

yeah, I think this is more expensive than fixing up cars.
400mm f/2.8 IS = $7500 ... Supercharger for my Benz = $6300. Umm...decisions!

LOL, I went crazy when I got my 20D. Think I am done spending on lenses and Equipment! YEAH RIGHT!! I just gave up and gave my credit card number to my local camera store and direct deposit my paycheck to the store as well for store credit. I'm SICK but not an "L" coholic, YET :)

You will subcum to the dark side Luke. I have to admit, once I got my hands on the 24-70L it has been hard to think about other glass. And like everything else, resale values let you know if you spent your money well. Seems like the WOW factor comes at about the $1000 mark. I don't have too many hobbies though.

I felt the same way after I bought my 70-200 2.8L. Images were tack sharp, focus was fast. Then I bought a 17-40 4.0L, but I really wanted a 16-35 2.8. Now I have to replace my 28-70 2.8 Tokina with another "L". This is what heroin addiction must be like....
Next on the list after a 24-70 2.8L is a 300 2.8. Obewan is gonna be pissed cause the dark side is really dark.

I haven't spent more than a 1000 for a single glass............So I am technically not an Lcoholic yet............But yes, this is a very expensive hobby!!!! Even the filters and bags add up to the cost.
.............YIKES!!! Ro1

Unfortunately, I have too many hobbies. I would have mroe camera equipment if I could just settle down to one obsession. Between the car, the computers, the guns and the cameras, I have spent my "allowance" for the year and it is only April. What am I going to do? :(

Ah, the compulsory research. Internet has become such a tease it will drag you right to the shopwindow with nice small .jpg items and it will show you what those items can do and it will compare them for you and tell you, dude, this is it, this is better than that and it even costs less!
Now after I've done enough research to make a solid masters degree in 'photography equipment for wannabe super duper photographers' I see things so clearly, that I need no more research, I can share you my wisdom now:
1. L's only, few exceptions
a) you're new in SLR world and can't afford to buy many focal lengths at once - get other brands (Tamron, Sigma) quite-but-not-quite L quality
b) 50mm f1L don't make no sense
-explore and exploit primes
-get a body that you can afford. You don't need 1Ds MKII so that your photos don't look like crap, your photos can look like crap with any camera, but that's not the point here, point is, get a good camera, but not that expensive that you cannot afford any lenses for it, get it?
-don't think about EF-S lenses, they are plain wrong, and you know that sooner or later, all your lens are belong to L.

NOOOOOOOOOooooooooooo! Must resist. Must cut up credit card. Too weak.
And I thought that my 1/4 scale R/C airplane hobby was expensive. Wife should be happy I am putting that aside until the kids are older. LOL

Hey, this is starting to sound promising - finally a way to get something for my collection of FD lenses! :D How about an omelet for my 135 f2.5? Or that scrumptious-sounding Tuna sandwich for my 24 f2.8?

Errrr....Well, the coffe shop across the street takes FD lenses. Were a high class place. Sorry we only take EF and EFS as payment. OR you could do some of my overdue work flow and processing in trade for that tuna sandwich! :D  :D

Do not ask me, I am on the same boat... got a couple of new guns, some lenses and some scuba gear and the allowance is well gone (actually, I went a little out of budget with the last Bushmaster... :( )
Now I am planning to get some extra jobs (I am self employed) to regain a little allownace for the rest of the year.
We all have to handle priorities and make decisions. I hate that. Gotta find a way to feed my hobbies for free...

If you think that is expensive, try getting into photography to such an extent that you decide to throw in your $175K pa job to start working as a wedding photographer for about $40K pa. That's when you know your hobby/passion/obsession is starting to be a bit expensive!
