So we went to DC for the Cherry Blossom festival last weekend and we were walking around the Ronald Reagan Trade Center, which is a new building. A lot of POTN members were also walking around, since I saw so many IDMKII and 1DsMKIIs that weekend, I was drooling.

In any case, here we are in this huge crowd gathered for the cherry blossom festival parade, and I spot this guy walking around with his girlfriend in one hand and this tripod on the other hand. I was wondering, why would this guy be carrying just a tripod, closed up, but legs extended, like it was a walking stick. I thought I had seen wrong and assumed it was a crutch or something like that. Later that afternoon, I spotted him with his "crutch" only to realize it was indeed a tripod. Attached to the tripod was this teenie tiny little camera. I almost fell over laughing when I saw him set up to take a photograph of something. I quickly zoomed in on him and caught him in his glory. He looked up at me and gave me a dirty look and I moved on. Bless him. At least his photos will be sharp!

Enjoy.

Is he a goofball because he uses a tripod or because his camera is small?

I know it looks kind of odd but I have used the S50 on tripod quite a few times (time lapse, me in the picture too, panoramas, multiple exposures)

maybe because the camer is on the mount backwards.

I have used tripods with my sony DSC-S70 so I can't relate to making fun of him. tripods are useful.

Interesting comments. Goofball is a lovable term in my vocabulary. Sorry for the confusion. The reason I thought this guy was a goofball was because of the way he was carrying the tripod, not the way he was using his camera. He was carrying his big tripod fully extended with this little camera attached through an estimated crowd of 1,000,000 people that day. He really looked like a guy with an aluminum crutch.

I've done the same thing....used a tiny camera on a large tripod before, so I am a goofball too. :p

As for the camera, I think it is one of those Casio Exlim jobs.

Nothing funny here...
I do that all the time...
those cheap cameras can provide quite good images when they are kept still for a while on a tripod...especially in the dark...not all of us can afford an EOS camera...

Come on, lighten up. I've done it myself, but that doesn't stop it from looking a little funny when the tripod head is bigger than the camera (on backwards at that).

:lol::lol::lol::lol: ROFLOL!

I won my tripod in an online auction.
When I went to pick it up I discovered it was brand new, and had never been used. The guy had purchased it when his son told him he would get him a digital camera. Expecting it to be something respectable he to got a cheap tripod to use. When his son showed up with his new camera it was something even smaller than the one above!:lol:

Iv walked around car show with my little A80 stuck on a tripod, never once got a funny look, and never had any trouble getting a clear shot of a car :p

1. we are all learners here, im sure that when you first started out, you were no expert. that is the purpose of this forum, to HELP each other, not name call. so really calling someone a goofball because he has his camera on the tripod backwards is impoliteand and can discourage people from trying. hey maybe his execution is not there yet, but his intentions are valiant. And to laugh in someones face is just plain rude, no matter how you justify it. I hope noone laughs in your face the next time you are learning something new and make a mistake. its discouraging, and the whole air of snobbery has no place on this very friendly and helpful forum
2. i would suggest removing the picture or the title or something, as now not only have you ridiculed him directly by laughing in his face, but you have insulted him and put it on the net for all the world to see. how would you like it if you made a mistake, got caught on film and someone posted it on the internet with the caption "hey check out this dumba**

3.i am trying to be civil, therefore I use emoticons to keep the conversation friendly   :(  :) :o :D ;) :p

this forum is a place to learn not a place to insult those who dont know. lets keep the posts friendly and uninsulting. i have been guilty of some posts that were viewed as unfriendly and i realize that it is not helpful, so I am very careful to post as I realize there is no benefit in belittling soemone. thanks for you time.

Okay. Title of thread changed....as per your request. I really didn't think I was belittling him. I've seen other knowledgeable and good photographers doing the same thing. I do the same thing. I think I look like a goofball doing it. I think anyone with a big tripod with a teenie tiny camera looks like a goofball when they have their gear setup. In fact, my old avatar was of me being a goofball. Now, about that goofball club membership....would you like to be our legal counsel? :p

California Dreamers
Most studio advertising car shots are done with indirect light bounced off huge flats & are shot on 8” X 10” sheet film. We once had these guys from CA rent one of our studios for a car shot. For American Motors I think. They hung the bare bulb of the biggest light we had (50K) from the ceiling like a small sun. That was the only light. Then they brought out a huge Cine tripod for about a 50 pound camera & put a Nikon F on it! I almost died trying to keep a straight face. We never saw them again.

Yes, but on a trial basis, mainly for the following reasons.

1. You do not have a goofball smile (see my picture above)
2. You do not have your tripod legs fully extended
3. Your picture is not that sharp
4. Your white balance is lacking

You having a round head does help a little. I'll confer with other fellow goofball members and get back to you on your membership. ;)

Thanks,

thanks for understanding. The last time I was laughing with everyone at nothing was in a mental institution. But I see what you mean. There is a fine line between humor and cruelty. I don't think pradeep1, et al, crossed it here. Come on, when you laugh, you are laughing at something, right? The gentleman in the pic was obviously aware of his appearance, otherwise he would not have given a pradeep1 a dirty look. As for being posted on the web, I prefer that any pictures containing me, be far more outrageous than this one. Someone out there has a shot of me laying on the ground, at my son's feet, telling him to look cluless for this shot. Someone took a pic. "Look at this goofball, that kid has put up with his father for the rest of his life! He is prolly already scarred for life" Yep. The point is, Someone has a pic of me, my son, and this polar bear. They are laughing at us right now. Good for them.

Ok, smittymike, point taken. I am CERTAINLY not an expert at anything, least of all photography. I joined this forum out of a desire to improve, and generally find information in this forum to be quite helpful.
That doesn't mean I've lost my sense of humor. I understand the reason for putting a P&S on a tripod, and have done it many times myself. That doesn't stop it from looking funny. Mea culpa if you've taken offense, but I'm chuckling at myself here as well.

well that feels good. we can all disagree then make up :) i have story that can probably sum all of this up. I had a job where me and 4 other guys worked in a room together. The company was run pretty poorly so in order to survive we had to take it in a very humorous fashion. we basically made jokes about ourselves constantly..self deprecating stuff like "man i am so stupid", "well if theres a way to mess it up ill find it" stuff along those lines. And the great thing was that the other guys that sat with us would chime in with stuff like "yeah you might mess it up but id mess it up worse". so it was a safe environment to make jokes about yourself and you could laugh at your self. Well one day a new guy started and he was not very good at making fun of himself and to make matters worse if you said soemthing like "yeah man im such a moron..." he would say "yeah you are" and laugh at you, basically taking a quick shot at you. then he would take it upon himself to say "you are a moron, without me saying it first...." he took advantage of the situation to insult me. Its annoying to have that guy around. everyone likes to be able to laugh at themselves and others mistakes, it can be good clean fun. but since the guy in the picture isnt here to make fun of himself, this post is kinda like that guy (at work), where we are laughing at him, when we arent sure he'd laugh back. now if the caption had read something like "been there done that" where you laughed about soemthing you did that was goofy looking and compared it to this guy, then it would have taken on a whole new light. as it stands it could have been worded better and i think we all realize that. :)
ANYWAY, pradeep just got a chance to look at your porfolio. alot of interesting shots there. cool mix of closeups, environmental and portarits. i particularly like the B&W of the chair and cinder (sp?) blocks. Great work.
