Nice shot, really captures the emotion.

I like the vibrant colors of the series.

I've never shot a protest/rally before, so I brought a few of my lenses. However, I ended up just using my sigma 10-20 most of the day.

I took a slightly different approach, by going up to individuals and asking if I could take a photo of them with their signs, usually around the 10mm range.

Here's a few I've processed from the Knoxville Tea Party:

One of my favorite things at protests is to look for signs with words spelled wrong. Some of them really help their cause.

This event was at Tanglewood Park in Bryan.

There were two Tea Parties.

The "Bryan/College Station Tea Party" was held in Bryan at Tanglewood Park.

The "Brazos Tea Party" was held at Veterans Park in College Station.

There was also a small Tea Party in Rudder Plaza on campus coordinated by the YCT.

Nice series, I really like how you interacted with the people...really ads more personality and emotion to your photos.

By the way, I herd NYC had a huge turnout...where are all the NY street photographers...did no one go to document the rally downtown?

Replicated from the People forum after I found this thread.

Sounded like a great photo-op, so I blew off my responsibilities and went down to Columbus Park to see what I could get.

When I got there, Michael Graham, a local talk radio host, was manning an open microphone.

http://rutt.smugmug.com/photos/513764431_ttBH5-L.jpg

Anyone who wanted got 30 seconds with the bullhorn. People expressed a lot of angry, but the atmosphere was actually very easy going and friendly. Although Michael Graham has strong opinions, his background is as a comedian, and his fiery opinions come in a good natured package.

Thanks, really appreciate it. There really couldn't have been nicer folks that showed up, and everyone was willing to chat and have their photos taken. I'm just really glad that the organizers had the foresight to print event staff badges for us, made us 100% more credible as photogs to the crowd.

Wow...if one is going to take the time to make a sign, why not learn how to spell first. I mean...these are small words she is using...and what does that sign mean anyway?

Menelaus
17th of April 2009 (Fri), 12:38
and what does that sign mean anyway?
it's referring to the numerous democratic cabinet appointees that have been rejected due to tax issues in their background, and the fact the media would have torn up any republican that had been in their shoes.

plus the fact that folks like you and me can't evade the irs without significant penalties.

DDWD10
17th of April 2009 (Fri), 12:41
I've browsed many photos of this event on Flickr and one thing I've noticed is how original the signs are - I hardly saw any duplicates.

rutt
17th of April 2009 (Fri), 13:25
Regardless of what the sign says and the spelling, this is an interesting shot because it shows heated dialog between the subjects.

Nope, I have been in Iraq for the past 5 and a half years. ;]

 5 years...now I understand, your question. So much has happened in just 5 years here in the states, with the end of the last administration and the beginning of the current one, it's honestly hard to keep up with....I can't imagine what you must be thinking.

I know this can turn into a really politically charged debate, and we've actually made it to the fourth page before I had to delete anything.
Please people, this thread was started in good faith with a journalistic approach. Let's keep it that way. Any further comment that tries to push this into a political debate will be deleted. And depending upon severity, the poster could in fact end up with disciplinary action taken as well. Please think about this before you post. I really hope that was plain enough to understand. Thanks. ;)

I attended a Tea Party in Fresno, California along with over 7.500 other folks. While these people from all walks of life were passionate about their causes, I was singularly struck by their camaraderie and politeness. Strangest protest I have ever witnessed.
Of course there were the requisite signs and flags.

And my personal favorite prop, Cowboy Porker.

The owner says that Cowboy is house trained. When he needs to go out and "do his business" he rings a bell and they let him out. Recently Cowboy was heading for the door so someone opened it for him. When he got outside he realized that he had not rung the bell. He went back in, rang the bell, then went out to do his business.

This one was taken where we were funneled in from MARTA toward the event. We were near the event however couldn't go the direct route. Moments later thousand of us walked about a mile around several blocks to get back to where the event was taking place.

This picture shows the police officer directing people to remove the sticks from each of their signs. I guess that applied to flags as well.
