I'm looking for some advice here, I live in Dublin Ireland and I left my 10D into a local camera shop in January 28th to get a clean, they sent it off to canon uk, as canon Ireland don't clean the 10D, they told me that it would not take more than 4 weeks to get cleaned. It's now the 15th of April and I still have'nt recieved my camera, I have called the shop numerious times, and they gauranteed me two weeks ago that the camera would be here by today, the guy in the shop said he phoned canon uk and they still have to get around to cleaning the camera. I was going to my solicitor onto them, what do you think I should do...go in the shop and demand my camera or a new camera because this is far from acceptable. Any advice would be helpfull, any else ever been in this situation before???

Firstly welcome to the forum but what a sad first post and what a sad indictment on Canon UK.
I would get in touch with Canon UK buy e-mail or phone, this length of time is not acceptable.
Here are the contact details for Canon UK;
http://www.canon.co.uk/contact_us/canon_europe_contacts/europe/united_kingdom.asp
Next time you need to clean the camera ( I assume it's the senor ) have a go yourself, it's really not that difficult.
Best of luck.

Cheers Iomond, I thought I posted here before as I look at it everyday, seems like it is my first post. Thanks for the quick I will give canon uk a buzz and see what they have to say, but as far as I can see my service level agreement is with the shop and not canon uk, its up to the shop to do the chasing with canon, but I'll ring them see what they have to say. I will update.

This strikes me as strange. In my dealings with Canon UK service centres they have always give accurate estimates of the turnaround time and have always met or bettered them.
Talk to your camera shop and get from them the Canon job reference and the details of the service centre they sent it to. If you can't get the job reference, don't worry too much as Canon track most of their jobs by the item's serial number.
Give the service centre a call and ask for an update on the job. I suspect there is more to this than meets the eye. Perhaps the camera sat on your camera shop's shelf for a while before it was sent off?
In any case. Your route for recourse is through the camera shop you used. Once they agreed to provide the service for you the camera is their responsibility and it's their job to make things right for you.

I just got off the phone to canon uk and they gave the me spill that they are under staffed with alot of technicians away, thats not problem....anyway I think your right Cadwell, as I have a service level agreement with the shop and its up to them to do all the chasing, the owner of the shop will be in the shop today, I'm going to pay him visit. In worse case secenario I have to wait another two weeks do you think I should pay for this as I was told already that I would'nt be charged the full amount or refuse to pay.

Ionad I was told by canon back in february that it was dirt behind the sensor, which I thought was strange, as you should'nt see this in the view finder or should you!!!

If it is genuinely Canon's fault then it would be harsh to punish the camera shop. It's your call as to how helpful and proactive they have been. If they have been neither, then kick up a stink.
For reference with regards to Canon's service centre level of busyness... they just turned around a repair on my EF 100-400L in two weeks - exactly what they estimated.

Never heard of dirt behind the sensor.
If you were seeing dirt in the viewfinder I would assume the dirt would be on the mirror. You would only see sensor dirt on the PC during processing.
P.S. No big deal, but it's Lomond or Cameron. :)

If the goods are under warranty you can, under UK law put them on notice that it will be your intention to reject the goods and demand a replacement or refund if they do not return your item within a reasonable period of time. A four week period is generally considered reasonable for repairs. so if you send a letter today that you will persue them (Canon UK) for the refund (threaten to buy a Nikon with the money!) should they not have the 10d, repaired, back to you within seven days.

The problem here is he is not under UK law he is in Dublin, however your point may still be valid under EU law :?
Give Canon UK some verbals about not being happy regarding the under staffing ( I mean as high up the ladder as you can get ) and threaten to take your custom elsewhere on that very fact, ie poor after sales service.

OK, just read HKFEVER's thread and maybe you should ask Canon UK if the problems are similar. If they are give them the benefit of the doubt or maybe ask for a replacement if you haven't had it too long.
After all HKFEVER's on his 3rd ( I believe) 1Ds MK II.

I was just talking to the guy that owns the shop and he could'nt understand why its taking so long to get cleaned, so he has given me a replacement 20D until my camera is returned, he also said that I won't have to pay for the cleaning work, so not bad but still want my own camera back. I won't be using the service again when I get it returned. On another note whats the best method or products for cleaning the sensors? Thanks foir all the replies.

You might not want to give that 20D back. ;)
Anyway, this is a popular way of cleaning a sensor;

Thanks Iomond, I have a 20D myself but just took this one in case I see no sight nor sound of my 10D, looks like that copperhills method is the one I'll be purchasing, thanks for all the replies
