I am looking for a better lens than the kit lens for my new 20D. I have been looking at the EF 24-85 and the EF 28-105.
Is one of these better than the other in image quality?
I am assuming they will both be better than the kit lens? [sharper, less barrel distortion]
Thanks, Mike

I'm in a similar situation and came to the conclusion that the EF-S 17-85mm IS USM is probably a very good alternative, in particular for the 20D. It is sharp and covers a nice range. Did you consider this lens?

Look at thisp (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56752). I have the Tamron 28-75, great value, great performance.

I'll second the Tamron, it's a great lens for a really good price. F2.8 to boot as well. 28mm isn't very wide, but it is manageable.
