If its a pure sine wave inverter it should be fine. If its not, you do run the risk to causing issues with the electronics in the strobe.

This is the one that was used in the Alien Bee Vagabond kit. I've used it on multiple brands of strobe with great success. Even when running a 12 photographer workshop and cranking away at it all day long.

And what type of battery do you use? A deep cell, like a marine battery?

I use a 26Ahr gel cell battery, which is quite a bit more than the stock Vagabond. It is a bit heavier, but gives me more flashes per charge. Or if available, I just clamp it to my car battery and use that, and run the car for 15 minutes every so often to top off the battery. If you make one up yourself, do put a fuse on very near the battery on the positive lead just in case.
