Why is the shutter release so much noisier on my 20D than it is on my 10D?

Because it has a faster frame rate and is supposably built better allowing a longer shutter life.

ever shot with a rebel? I can barely hold the camera from not falling out of my hands when that mirror slaps :-P;)
It's not that bad on a 20D

Its just a differnt design of the mirror. It has nothing to do with build quality nor framerate.
The 1DMKII is quieter then the 1D and its faster and its supposed to last the same. FYI, an official Canon rep has told me that basically the numbers are true D series 50K-70K, 1 Series 190K-210K.

MKII's are rated at 250,000.
