Getting the tobacco fields ready for spring planting, the fields have been harrowed and the works are seen starting to put up the netting for the Connecticut Valley Shade grown Tobacco. The stuff grows like a weed, you can almost watch it grow.

The posts you see not only hold up the netting but are put in, in 10' squares called bents, which equal the bents in the barns where they hang the tobacco to dry.

Wow. A lot of effort for a weed! :)

Nice documentary picture Sandy. How long to the harvest is ready?

A big Money weed, this tobacco is used just for cigar wrappers, it's classified as the best in the world and they refer to the fields as Million Dollars an Acre fields. I'll try to get more shots as the plants grow. pretty amazing to see the whole operation. They'll do there first picking sometime in early July I think.

That would be an interesting series of pictures. Will you be able to get into the barns for some shots of the hanging of the leaves? And we'll all be expecting you to hand out some cigars at the end. :)

Might be tough taking a photo in the barns, there rather dark in there. I am going to try and get out and take as many as I can of the operation.
