View Full Version : FILM "BACKUP"?

I'm debating whether or not to sell a Canon AE-1 that I have.
It belonged to my step-father, and Mom gave it to me when he died, as she was never going to use it, and my brother has more cameras than he knows what to do with. It's the body, a few different lenses, flash unit, and a Canon bag.
Honestly, I don't foresee ever using it. As much asd I thought I would, I just view digital as too versatile and, well, too easy, to ever want to shoot film again.
I wouldn't even know where to price it. I see film outfits selling for anywhere bewteen $100.00 and $1,000.00.
Any suggestions?

think wide-angle and fisheye ;)
Perhaps you will end up using it after all.

Well your 300D has a crop factor of 1.6x. You will never get your shots as wide as is possible with a film camera. I have saved my Canon Elan IIe but have yet to use it. Still film camera's don't sell for much and you never know when it may be nice to have one around. If anything as a collectible.

wide angle photography is really crippled by these smaller APS sized sensors.
You can mount a 17mm on your film camera and that wil be w i d e !
Unless you plan to get a full frame DSLR :D

I just sold an AE-1 body on ebay (very good condition & not the program version) for $53. Hardly enough to buy another small CF card.

Yeah, I see that they're not going for much, which is why I'm on the fence about selling it...

I just offered most of my old FD stuff to my sister, who's got some already. Agreed, the AE-1 isn't going to add anything to your EOS capabilities, so is selling it worth the effort, or would it have any sentimental value if you kept it?

No, the items with any sentimental attachment are two pieces of jewelry that I wear regularly. The camera was just something that my Mom wouldn’t use, and she thought I might. I’ve had it since September, and it hasn’t even seen a roll of film…

Maybe see if you can donate it to a local school or community photography program? That way you'd know it was getting appreciated, and you might get a bit of a tax writeoff as a charitable donation.

I wish I had a nice FD body, I have two FD lenses I'd like to put to use.
Alas, no more money to spend on photography stuff. I'd keep it...

Keep it steve. It would make one nice paperweight. LOL. Seriously, might have some sentimental value down the road.
Long time ago my A-1, lenses and supporting staff were ripped off. Still looking for the SOB as, sob it was my first. You never forget your first do ya fellas?
