Looks like Canon has taken the lead from Sony in Digital camera sales. The article is here:

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000101&sid=aajYdpne9bIM&refer=japan

From the article:

Canon Inc. edged past Sony to take the top global share with 17.1 percent, helped by sales of its digital single-lens reflex cameras, IDC said. Sony dropped to 16.7 percent. SLR cameras see images directly through the camera lens and are favored by professionals and advanced users.

``That whole piece of the market has become much more of a consumer market,'' Chute said. ``Consumer fixed-lens cameras that cost $800 to $1,000 have gone away and SLRs are taking over.''

I find this a bit surprising:

Of the 74 million digital cameras shipped last year, 2.5 million were SLR models, IDC said.

That's only 3.4% for SLR's. Expected it to be more.

You'd be surprised at the number of people with point and shoots. They're everywhere. Even at the race track, the rally.. And shooting their maximum 15 images on a 32Mb card. I find it funny. That was me 18 months ago.

Ha ha, now that 3.4% is no longer surprising.

Yea but before DSLR, and more specifically the 300/350D series, there was probably only a 0.5% SLR market maybe 1%....so there has been substancial growth with the cheaper SLR's and they are gaining more popularity everyday, so its going to grow rapidly and it will probably max out at 20% absorbtion until a good cheap DSLR is released with both traditional SLR functions but also a P&S mode for newbs/lazy people who look for a good sensor and not that interested in the mechanics of photography. IF they do come out with such a camera where u can lift a switch and it turns into a easy to handle P&S functionaility then you will probably see a even bigger jump and see something like 50%-60% abosorbtion. I doubt it will get higher then that since there is a huge market for small compacts and by the time the tech reaches such a high percentage, it will be a day when quality is almost exact on all cameras (where it reaches the realism a human eye can permit) and then the only differences between cameras would be physical size and print size. I'd say that this day would come when the majority of us are on the edge of death or already there and our children are retiring.
