Ok ive asked this before and it went no where. I have searched high and low and cant find the answer.

I have a canon 40d and a 580ex2 speedlight. I can not afford a wireless trigger but want to get the flash off camera. I am trying to put the flash in m mode as people have said so I can connect it and use the sync cord but it still will not fire. Please if anyone has some step by step or any help at all please let me know.

Thanks again in advance
Rob

Have you read page 22 in the flash manual?

Thanks for the quick reply

Are you using a male to male PC sync cord like this.... and is it plugged into the correct hole on your camera and your flash? I think the PC port may be disabled if there is a flash in the hotshoe.

yep its the same type of cord just no screw lock. Yes I have it plugged into the right spots on the camera and the flash. No its not attached to the hot shoe. I usually use the flash on camera or I use my ab800's but I want to be able to use the speedlight off camera because its more portable.

Thanks again

The threemost likely options are:
- flash is disabled on camera body (put it in the hotshoe and see if it works, if so it's not this), or
- flash isn't in manual mode, or
- the sync cord's faulty.

Flash mode or faulty sync cord is by far the most likely option.

I'd say it's the PC cord. Those things are unreliable as h*ll.

so i click the mode button until it shows an M? The display is blinking at me, does this mean something is wrong? The flash allways works on the hot shoe so thats fine. The cords fire my bees with never an issue and ive a few different ones. Ah maybe its just not meant to be.

Display blinking usually means the wide angle diffuser is pulled out.

How are you attaching the cord to the flash? The Bee has a 1/8-inch stereo plug.

The sync port is disabled in Manual-Master mode on the 580EX II, is that the mode you are in?

If so, use one of the other manual modes. I think they are Manual-Slave and Manual-Off. The PC port is not disabled in these "other" manual modes.

Consult your users manual for the exact names of the modes.

Enjoy! Lon
