This was my first attempt at the moon. I used the Sunny 16 rule and took this shot handheld with my 70-300 DO IS at 300. This is actually a 100% crop.
All Comments are appreciated.

Not bad! But yes,i too think it's a little out of focus.
Moon shots virtually REQUIRE manual focus and lots of bracketing

thanks

looking at the exif - I think I should have bumped up the ISO as 5.6 is wide open at this focal length so I could have stopped down a little more. Also, I am sure a tripod would have helped

deffo a good idea to stop the lens down a bit , and as you said , a tripod would be good as well , i am waiting for the moon to show itself as i have just got a jessops 2x convertor to go with my 70-300 and 1000d , i can take the convertor back within 30 days if it is no good , i just need the moon to show itself !!!!!!!

What do you mean lots of bracketing for the moon?

Have to agree here. Sunny 16 rule always applies

I've had pretty good luck shooting the moon using auto focus. I've typically shot it when the sky is still pretty bright so I can up the aperture and make the craters a little sharper.
