I'm looking for something sturdy, not too bulky and would prefer metal but wouldn't rule out a good strong plastic. Online, Home Depot/hardware store whatever.

Thanks for the help.

ThinkTank (http://www.thinktankphoto.com/ttp_products.html) & Tamrac both make these and they're very well thought out and stand up to the constant abuse I give them daily.

I've never had one fail or unbuckle on me, not once. They're of the plastic type, not metal

The Domke Gripper is a great strap that comes in a Quick Disconnect form as well. I just got mine and love it.

I realized after reading your replies that I left out a very important bit of info. I have a Crumpler Industry Disgrace strap that I love, but sometimes it just gets in the way. So I'm looking for QD's that I can add to my current strap.

Optech straps come with Quick Disconnect ends, and on a number of straps they come with your choice of end (3/8" webbing vs. 'pro loop' end)

if you're trying to diy, go to a camping store and see what they have in terms of quick-disconnects, i second the suggestion about the optech disconnects.

I bought both the Crumpler strap you have and 2 of the POTN version of the Optech straps PLUS the longer 3/8 inch extra long straps because I want my cameras hung lower than the Canon straps allow. I just got them but haven't done any field work with them but I'm not sure I'll trust the quick connects. I suspect I'll add a safety strap through the 2 sections of strap.

I would love to find something that actually disconnects at the camera an doesn't leave short straps hanging from the camera. Mine has a clip 6 inches from the camera and leaves the strap to get in the may.

Same here, when I want the strap off, I don't want any "danglies" I'm thinking split rings on the camera. I just need to find something sturdy, preferably black, and not too large.

I tried the split ring trick on my 20D. I took the original ones off of my A 1 film camera, and although they worked as wanted they also wore paint off around the mount area.

Check out #7 "Utility Loop" here: http://optechusa.com/product/detail/?PRODUCT_ID=48&PRODUCT_SUB_ID=&CATEGORY_ID=4

The loop connects to the camera lugs and you can then snap the strap to the other end.

I thought the PacSafe one I got wasn't bad. It's got wire through it and it cost me around $27 delivered and it's amazing.

Thanks John,
That is just what I'm looking for. I've come across these before and some how I must have killed the brain cells that held that information:D I plan on picking up a set of the swivel hooks as well. I'll just cut the webbing off of them and attach them to my Crumpler Industry Disgrace strap. Awesome strap, but in the way when using a tripod.

I too tried these "Utility Loops". They seemed to work fine, but it concerned me that the main stress point on the Loops was about 5mm of 'plastic'. Would be nice if this was metal. Trusting this to support my 40D+grip+70-200 bothered me, so I learned to live with the basic strap.
