For those of you who have used or seen both . . . Aside from the USM, is there any other difference between the new kit lens and the original kit lens? Is there any optical improvements or build improvements with the newer one?

Gracias!

Here's a picture I took a few days ago with the kit 18-55 lens. The picture is hosted on Smugmug and is reduced in size. No major post processing done other than resizing and auto levels. Turned out pretty good. This was not taken RAW. I'm really not sure if USM will make it better.

thanks, 021411. i'm planning an upgrade to a 20D and so far I'm thinking of just hanging on to my original kit lens.

I'm gonna hang onto mine until I can get my hands on a few more lenses. The wide end comes in handy sometimes.

Mark, I beleive that there is a diference in element quality between the two, but I honestly do not know. If you are upgrading to a 20D, whats a little more cash for a quality wide? Yeah I know, every penny saved counts. I sold my kit and saved to my 10-22 and think this was the best decision for me and my 20D.

i wish i could get a quality wide, but i promised someone http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif i would not spend more than a 20D kit, but if there's no difference, then I would just get the body only, as i use my tamron 95% of the time anyway. what i always seem to want, though, is reach, so the 70-200 will be next.

Dante I hear that all the time on this forum. Here is something to think about. If you do that enough you will inevitably only have half (if your lucky) of your camera gear after the divorce. :)

I very rarely use the kit lens, though I wanted a wide angle, so when I upgraded to the 20D I repurchased the standard kit lens, not USM. The 18-85 EF-S IS USM (or whtever it is) was mildly attractive, though I decided not to bother.

After my resent fiasco with the imfamous 24-70/2.8, I put the kit lens on a tripod and did a sharpness test and found it to be quite sharp edge to edge I did some portraits with it yesterday and really couldn't tell much difference between it and a 50, stopped down to 5.6,which made me wonder if the USM model, might not be a decent prospect. I'm starting to really question some of these test sites and their opinions on different lenses, because my tests come up with quite different results, or it could be that there is just no continuity at the Canon factories.

All of the kit lens versions are (optically) identical
.......in other words barely usable:evil: :( :(

The only reason there is a type II designation is that they wanted to change the cosmetics slightly-this was explained in the canon tech info when the type II was released.
Both USM versions (the original japanese-only USM and the type II USM) are optically the same as all the others but for a micro USM motor. This is the cheap type of USM which gives little benifit in focus speed over the standard type

That wouldn't work for me. I almost sleep better on the couch than in the bed. She'd probably make me sleep in the car (w/the dog...who snores!). ;)
