Hi, does it sound right that while in Auto, I can't use the other white balance setttings ie: tungsten etc? I can only access them in P setting. Thanks!

Right - full auto (AKA "Green Box") is just that - you have very little control over anything. 90% of the time my cameras are in "P". I can control ISO, white balance, RAW (on the DSLRs and SX1), . . .

I think you meant by your question "Is that the right thing Canon should have done?" (I think also all other manufactures do the same in the full auto mode)
The idea is as long as you decided to let the camera decide for you, it should do the whole thing. This prevents you from ruining the photo by forgetting a parameter on an old settings or something. And on the other hand you have the P mode that is quiet the same as the auto except that you can manipulate everything.
