ok, so i just bought my second mark ii, and the file names are different HT4Uxxxx. vs MF1Axxxx. I'd really like to customize the four first characters to my business. Is there some way to do this?

i have the same problem with my 20d and d30, there the prefixes are img_ on both of them. and i do not enjoy duplicate file names.

as it's too late for the pictures we took this trip - can someone tell me a dos renaming procedure ?

thanks, martina

If you are using Windows XP you can do within Explorer

The first four characters are the unique identifier for the camera and are not changable in-camera. You will have to use software to rename the files either during or after downloading them.

I no longer use Breezebrowser to do Raw conversion but it is very good at renaming files based on whatever criteria you want. I use it for that and a couple of other small things that they do very well. As far as I know the first few characters in the 1DMKII cannot be changed.

Thanks for the replies but it seems like those suggestions are all after I take the pictures. I take approximately 1200 photos a day and don't want to spend the time even batch renaming them if I could do it "in camera". Does anyone know "for sure" if it can be changed "in camera" or not?

It can not be changed in camera - period. You can use Downloader Pro from Breeze Systems to re-name as you transfer them. That is the simplest and quickest option. I take and process about the same number of shots per day as you (in RAW) and use Downloader Pro for its speed and other features.
