View Full Version : Pirelli International ... My Take

A few photos from Friday and Saturdays Pirelli Rally .... would go as far to say my favorite event of the year so far. The majority were taken with the 'too slow for motorsport' 5DMKII which incidentially beats my 1DMKIII hands down for focus accuracy.

Even "not sports camera & lousy AF" can take that good pictures. I'll like much more that pictures from Portugal rally. Saw a few better on your site. Still, great captures here, and Hyundai is my no 1.
My first rally has been canceled and rest are very ? for this season (due to simple reason - no money and just 10-15 drivers in the whole country - who are not professionals (mostly) just an amateur drivers).
I think i need to go to UK or somewhere else.

Cracking stuff Jay, well worth the long drive. The shot of Wilks is my favourite here, you can see the determination in his eyes - real shame how it ended for him.
Agree with chaps above, some absolutely stunning shots on the website and for a man who says "I don't do 3/4 shots", if I could take some as good as that I'd be delighted!
All the best,
Rhod.

Nice set.
@jbanbury
Because of my bad english,i did not understand if the 5MkII is slow in autofocusing during motorsports shooting,or if you call it "slow" because of the low fps.Can you please make it easier to understand?

As ever you produce something others don't always see.
Great shots if I had to pick favourites it would have to be 4,5 and 7, purely because I'm an oldish git and I love yesteryears cars and not a procession of Subarus, Focus's and citreons.
I love #3 purely because of those crazy kids, we've all stood (still do) in 'darwin award' places :)

Cheers Rich, maybe I should take more care when choosing which images to post on here from the selection I put on my site.

Thanks Ant. Shame you couldnt make it mate ... like I said best event I've done this year.

Cheers Rhod, appreciate the comments about the stuff on the website. I thought I'd try a few 3/4 ish type shots for a change .. pretty happy with the results.
What I do find odd is that the images on here dont look anywhere near as sharp as the ones that are hosted on my website. Maybe photobucket are doing some kind of compression on them. Anyone suggest a new file hosted service?

I'm constantly reading that the 5DMKII isnt that great for sports photography due to it's AF and FPS performance. Well my 5D will be my primary camera for all events from now on.

Cheers Tim, it's certainly the sharpest set of photos I've ever returned from a rally with.

No I always save them to web in PS ... just re-hosted the images (away from photobucket) which now look much better.

Colours a bit off? Think it might be time to calibrate your monitor mate.
As for the page 3 girls, the nearest I got was Simon, Wayne and Ben!

only the colours in 1 look off on here some of the white looks like it has a strong grey hint over it close to the burning of an image kind of thing.
Monitor is calibrated every 4 weeks ;-)
Somerset this weekend? some good spots running ;-)

Can only preume that was caused by the car hitting the shade. I calibrate mine every Monday, you have to to ensure it stays in-line.
Yeah I'll be down for the Somerset .. no idea where I'm heading yet, last year ended up at crap spots!

Cracking stuff mate. lol #3 I want those pinky gloves ha. One each too, nice touch.
Possibly #4 could do with a bit more contrast? mmm maybe being bit picky now. #5 is stunning, cracking balance with the light.

Does the monitor calibration make a big difference? Everyones monitor is different so everyone sees something different anyway, s'pose it just with prints etc?

Great set Jay - I like each and everyone of these a lot. Your positioning of the car in the frame is excellent.
Cheers,
Simon.
