I'm considering purchasing the 70-200 f/4L and just realized that it does not come with a tripod ring. I've heard this lens is considerably lighter than it's 2.8L counterpart, but does this weight discrepancy make it necessary to use a tripod ring if mounting on to a tripod? Basically, is the lens too heavy to mount the camera to the tripod head causing damage?

Personally, I don't think it needs a ring . The camera body can support it on the tripod.

I did a search for this yesterday here at POTN, and read up on opinions. My very brief summary is that most people though you could get away with not having the tripod ring most of the time, but some people thought it was very useful at least some of the time. A quick search (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/search.php?searchid=136701) might help you make the decision.

I like it becasue it makes it easy to rotate the camera into Potrait.

I have this lens and you dont NEED the tripod ring....but you might want it :-) so buy the lens and buy the ring at a latter date if you realy need it. I personaly will be picking up the Ring as I have a 200mm 2.8 and I like to use a monopod and it will fit both lenses.

I am finding a tripod ring for 70-200 f4/L too. I through I didn't need a tripid collar for the lens. However after a few portrait shot, I think a tripod collar will make it more easy to operate the lens. And the weight will be more balanced when using tripod collar.

I do like the ability to switch from hor. to vert. in a hurry as well, but I just like the way it balances on the tripod when using the mount, it just feels better.

I agree with the prevailing opinion ... you don't need the ring, but I have it and much prefer the balance of the camera/lens ... especially on a monopod. If you ever add a TC or extension tubes between the lens and the camera, then I think it becomes a need. Get the black Tripod Ring A (B) ... instead of the the white Tripod Ring A (W) ... same ring, different color - save $30.

Does the 70-200/4 use the same ring that the 100-400 uses?
