View Full Version : I HATE PHOTOGRAPHY!!!!!!!!!!!!

What can I say I hate it! I have been shooting and learning photography now for over a year and a half and I just realized that I hate it! Now every time I take a road trip I am framing up all the scenery, I am looking for things that would make unique, colorful, or abstract shots. I don't even listen to music in the car anymore I just look for anything I may want to come back and shoot at a later time. I am always looking at the sky now too, always telling myself dang I wish I had my camera to capture this once in a life time sunset. And OMG, to look at every picture now and NOT critique it is impossible. I thumb through almost every magazine while waiting for things like DR. visits seeing how the pros shoot and composition there shots. I HATE PHOTOGRAPHY!
I want to capture every family event on my camera; I have shot all my family and friend’s kids. I just went two days ago to get my small business license so I can try and do something with this thing I hate so much. I keep sinking more and more money into it and I am starting to get people’s attention and their business. I can’t stand it! It has ruined my life and I will never be able to recover from it. I am up all night, every night, either retouching photos or reading about photography. I hate it!
Is there any hope? Is there any support out there for people like me? Please someone help, I fear the worst will come of this. I have over 10,000 shots of just my daughter alone. WHY HAS THE GODS CURSED ME? WHY?
If anyone has an 800 number or can refer me to a place where I can get help, please I beg you HELP ME!

I would have read you entire post but since starting this hobby I am to poor to pay attention :D
I am with you on the critiquing every photo I see now. I also look at photos a lot to learn from them. Just the other day someone was showing me this shot of an absolutely beautiful woman in a magazine and the first thing that came to mind was 3 stobes.

OH NO, it's worse then I thought, you mean there are others out there like me. :( Maybe we can get a support group going, maybe even get together online and post our thoughts, and share talk about our photos and our equipment we all hate so much!
That would help right? It would have to.

Doubt it would help. My wallet was just fine till I found the gear section on a couple forums.
Oh and you are kind of on a site that is used for what you want right now.
So does anyone else turn down trip opportunities if they do not allow cameras? When someone ask me if I want to go somewhere my first question is " can I take photos" if their answer is " no" or " I am not sure" I say " I'll pass"

It's like a fat guy, asking a bunch of other fat guys to put down the plate of brownies....It just ain't gonna happen...:)
My solution to your problem is....Denial...keep denying that you have a problem and you should be ok, oh and get a G10, so you can have a camera on you at all times and you wont miss that shot..loool
(this is possibly the worst advise i've ever given in my life)

The funny thing is, I was thinking about how your freaking out at the keyboard would make a great photo. The problem with me, I see all these great shots but I'm too lazy to get out of the car or turn around and get the shot. But I do think about how great it could have been.
I've noticed that the urge to try and make a great photo out of everything fads after a couple of years. I used to spend every lunch break exploring the are around my work looking for old junk or interesting buildings to photograph, no I just enjoy my lunch and read a book. And I don't feel like I'm missing anything. Although the urge came back once I got my 70-200mm f/2.8.

I've been shooting for about a year and a half as well. While I don't think my symptoms are quite as bad as yours, I still wish I had a camera with me at all times and could spend endless time PP pictures. And the cost of gear never ends! I thought my 30D was going to be my last purchase for a while, but realized I needed a bigger bag!! lol. Now I'm thinking of getting a cheap 18-55IS to put on the Rebel for carrying around in the car "just incase".

Welcome to Canon Anonymous.
We do have a 12 point plan (but it only helps your addiction and doesnt cure it). The points are Composition, DOF, Blur (correct use of), Noise control (when to use high ISO), Posing (yourself and models), Flash, Studio lighting, Post processing, Printing, Cameras (how not to buy that new car because you NEED that camera), lens (how to avoid paying rent/mortgage payments because you needed that lens) and , last but by no means least, gear purchasing (bags tripods and miscellaneous money drains).
Just take a seat and join in with us "Hi, my name is <insert name> and I'm a photographer"

I think the problem is that U are still using a 40D.. Perhaps if U upgraded to a Full frame, your problem might disappear...

Hi, my name is Ryan and I'm a photographer. I have also applied for a small business licenses, I also have a never ending list of items i would like to purchase but my current job does not allow that. I would like to move out of my parents house(I'm 20) but in order to pay for rent as well as support my addiction i would need to get a second job, and possibly sell drugs.

A new forum catagoery. PA Photographers Anonymous or Photographers Addicted to Photography. We can always rationalize those purchases as " I can recoup most of it when I sell it". I hate it when driving down the intersate at 70 MPH surrounded by traffic ( no kidding try driving 270 in Maryland...) and you see something great..... dang.

Been that - done there. In addition I have had to endure the last 35 years of analyzing & critiqueing every building & room I see.
Eventually you will loose your mind & will no longer be bother by these issues

You are not alone.
I got the virus a couple of months ago and still as sick as ever. Move from XTi to 40D in 2 months; added 3 additional lenses and thinking of adding telephoto. All day and night I think about photography. Take every available opportunity to play with my camera. Drag it with me everywhere I go. Look up, down, side way and behind me wherever I am at to search for lighting & angle. Taking picture of my Son everyday. My wife laughs at me and gets jealous with Forty D sometime. I visit POTN everyday. I can’t help it either. So who know the 800 number? :)
I admit it, I am also an addict.

Writers have writer's block.
Photographers have photographer's block.
In the worst times, my hands wanted to smash the camera when I saw that I missed a shot.

The first step is admitting that you have a problem.
...Then we can begin the 12 steps

This one (and others) made me bust out with laughter.
I know this all to well. I know for a certain fact, now, that if I could get a 5DMKII that it would ease my suffering and I wouldn't want to shoot near as much. I even sometimes wonder if buying a D700 would help ease the pain of holding my Canon so much.
But for real I am always scheming on how to move funds around and sell more blood, I mean stuff, so I can upgrade. ;)

It's the legal heroin of the artistic masses.
It's the religion without the delusion.
It's the love without the pain.
It's the passion without the hate.
It's the desire for something more... Without knowing what.
Face it.. It's a placebo cure to our non-existent cornea disease.

As dear ol' Chuckie Finster would say, "We're doomed! DOOMED!"
And, if you are not a nice person, you will spend eternity in a place filled with priceless photo ops, and not a camera in sight.
Or worse, you will have available to you every Canon digital EOS ever made, with every "L" and "DO" lens ever made, and nary a memory card to be found.

No I figured my photo hell would be more like everywhere I turned someone is snapping my photo. That is why I am behind the camera I haven't had my pic taking in years. My family members are ready to throw eggs and tomatoes at me for never letting up on the shutter finger so I figure that will be my hell, a thousand camera all pointed at me.

I quit taking my camera to any sporting events now, especially baseball games. Every time I did, I would come back with a thousand shots, but no idea how the game went except for the boxscore on the board at the end.

It depends on where she shoots you. You can still shoot one handed, with a small lens...
My wife knows better than to tell me to leave the camera at home. In fact it's gotten to the point where she doesn't need to remind me to bring my camera.

Just bought a 100-400 yet to tell the wife, could be a divorce on the cards unless I can get her to believe I paid a couple of hundred quid for it. Got to do some serious selling on ebay or overtime;)
