Some portraits of my son Alexander using the 70-200 IS and treated the Schmoelzel way. (not exactly, but as a reference;))

You can! There's lots of good camera's out there. You don't need the latest and greatest to make a good photo. Do the best you can within your means.

You're absolutely right! The red mark under his nose is the remnants of a scar from a faceplant he did a few weeks ago. It's part of the 'documentation' of his youth.

Boy, he has grown, Alan. Adorable shots!
I hope you don't mind but I used a skin action on his face to smooth out the rough spots (I'll give you a link to it if you are interested). It also helps pop up the eyes a bit.
