I have not used the new 70-200 2.8, but I have the 80-200 2.8.
My experience is that it shots warm compared to my other lens, and is not as sharp, nor handle color as well, as my prime "L" lens.
Here are a few pics taken with the lens using a 10d, and no post processing

I don't think that the older 80-200 f2.8 has USM nor always-on manual focus. So the AF is is likely to be slower, drain the batteries in your camera more quuckly, and won't allow you to instantly re-focus by turning the focus ring.

Not sure what DaveG is referring to "nor always-on manual focus". But mine focuses as quickly as my 17-40L. It has of course the "M" setting and either ther 1.8m, or 3.5m auto focus options.
I was going to trade up to the 70-200 2.8 but after reading positive reviews about the "old" 80-200 decided for the time being not to spend the extra as I don't use those focal lengths that much.
If you can get a good used 70-200 2.8 at a good price I believe it would be the best choice, as DaveG says it will come with the USM and it will except extenters, which the 80-200 will not.
Actually after comparing my 10d pics to my elph 330 (see posting) I may dump the whole DLSR system until either I get a good handle on it, or it catches up to film. I know It's most likely my not knowing how to post process.

Not sure what DaveG is referring to "nor always-on manual focus". The 70-200 f2.8 L lens is designed so that you can manually rotate the focus ring at any time to make a focus adjustment manually, even when auto focus is turned on. Some lenses do not work this way, and with some lenses you can even damage the auto focus system if you force the manual focus ring while in auto focus mode.

Thanks for the explanation on the manually focusing in auto.

I used to have the 80-200 and switched to the 80-200 ust for the fact that I can use the 1.4 TC with it. I am so glad I did. The old lens was nice, and sharp. The new lens is IMO at least equally as sharp but lighter, accept the TC's and it's WHITE (who cares). I just bought my second 70-200 2.8 nonIS and am happy with my upgrade.
