Hi all just a quick question on DOF

What is a the general f stop to use to insure sharpness on a small group of people (2-4 ish) in a portrait? I have hit the web and can't seem to get clear cut answer on this. I wonder if my A-DEP button works well for this(?) +

One more quick quetion... I am very puzzled about. I have 75-300mm Canon zoom, f 4-5.6 ultrasonic...cheap lens I know... but all I can afford right now.... sometimes I can access the f4 and sometimes it will only go as low as the f5.6 What gives? I would think that I could access the f4 all the time. Any ideas?

Thanks for your time guys and gals

The 75-300 f4-5.6 has the maximum aperture of f4 at 75mm and f5.6 at 300mm. Between 75 and 300 it will vary between f4 and f5.6. I think it decreases geometrically but I'm not really sure. It should say in the manual.

Have fun.

BTW, the depth of field button will show you what is in focus. If you press this, the red squares will indicate what is in focus. I usually use f5.6-f8 for 4 or less people, depending on the focal length of the lens and how the people are arranged.

thanks guys, great as usual. Thats interesting, I never knew that. >>>Between 75 and 300 it will vary between f4 and f5.6<<<

>>>>the red squares will indicate what is in focus,<<<< Really eh. I have never noticed this...I don't use the DOF preview botton because all it seemed to do was darken the viewfinder (depending on how much I stopped down) which didnt really help me asertain the DOF. I will look for these red squares. Thanks

Even if they do, I wouldn't suggest using it as an indicator... cause "in focus" is subjective.
