Does anyone know of a good place to get their gear insured ? I have seen many places referred to on this forum but it seems that they all require homeowners insurance. I live in a apartment in the Boston area in a pretty bad neighborhood with lots of break ins, home invasions etc. and I would like to have some peace of mind. Please help me out with any info.

Check with your auto insurance company; they will probably offer what's called an "Inland Marine" or "Personal Articles Floater" policy. And you can often get a tenant's insurance policy for the contents of your apartment.

First off, sounds like you need renter's insurance anyway. Unless the only valuable items you have are cameras and lenses. :D

The usual way is to get a "personal articles" rider added to homeowners/renters insurance. You want all-risk coverage and zero deductible on the rider, while you'd probably have $250 or $500 deductible on renters coverage.

OTOH, some other POTNers have gotten personal articles insurance as a standalone policy.

I'm about to get camera insurance and I'm thinking of going to another company than my current insurer because my agent is pretty clueless - she had to call the home office before she could tell me about personal articles coverage. Geez.

I have a rider on my home owners policy. I think it cost me $17 every 6 months. I am sure you can do the same with your renters insurance, and if you do not have renters insurance get it first thing in the AM.

Thank you all. I will check with my Auto Insurance first, I use Arbella. With all the other electronics I own renters insurance sounds like a no-brainer. Thanks again.
