High jumpers at the local track meet. Regarding the color/B&W combo....I was playing around in Picasa3. Check out thr back bend in the other photo. Ouch!

cool stuff! Could you get closer a little? It would be fun to see a "jump face", those are always fun :)

Quick opinion: I am not a big fan of the desaturated area "wash"... that's just me.

Thanks for the comments; you're right about including the facial expressions...something to work on. I'm on a new beginning with some good used equipment...5d, 135L and 50 1.4. No zooms yet....no money yet, either. I do like shooting with primes, however.

Nice to see some jumping shots here. They are difficult for me to compose.

I also struggled with composition while I was shooting Pole Vault. The struggle was between getting a full perspective of the event or going for face shots. I opted for the face shots.....

see the following link for an example.

I like how you can see the whole venue in yours and I like the face shots in mine.I think that somewhere in between yours and mine might be best. By the way, I was using my 70-200 F4 but I only needed about 70-80 reach from where I was to get those shots.

Try shooting from behind the pit too. You'll get some great action AND faces as they clear the bar from there.

Hey, I like the pole vault shots. Good angles. Unfortunately at our high school the officials areal touchy about allowing non-participants on the infield of the track area. A little bit is ok, but I didn't want to push it. But they have their reasons, and maybe it's a good thing.
