Hi there,
First of all let me wish you all a happy new year !
This post just to know if you guys have heard something about the replacement of the D60 ?
I've contacted my usual dealer in in Europe to know if he had some D60 in stock. He replied me that Canon has asked them to stop taking orders for the D60.
"This is due to be removed from sale so we will only receive a few more models for the customers who have already ordered.
A successor will be issued by Canon, although so far we have not been given information on this. "
That's what they told me ...
All inputs are welcome :-)

I've heard of stores spreading such rumors to do a bait and switch. In other words, rather than admit they don't know when they will get more in, they tell you they won't so they can sell you something else.
In any case, I doubt the D60 is being replaced as demand for them still exceeds supply, and they are available at many stores online.

... as was the case with the D30 not so many months ago... :)

B & H has this little note on the D60 page...
"Note! This camera is being shipped in limited quantities. Back orders are being filled first, please call for more info."
Is Canon having trouble getting the product to all the retailers?

Nope, sounds to me like Canon are not taking any more orders for the D60... I think the replacement is about to be announced at PMA...

I think so, too. 3 probable reasons.
--It would be about time. The D60 is about a year old. Hasn't it been typical of Canon to refresh individual offerings annually lately?
--If Nikon, Fuji, or anyone else will be upping the ante in this range, then Canon will naturally be poised to jump. I suspect Nikon will have a replacement for the D100 soon, as it is slightly outclassed by its competition, at least in many people's minds.
--One maker is upping the ante, but in a higher price slot. That would obviously be Kodak with their 14N. That is not intended to be a professional camera of the caliber of the 1DS, but the logical next step after the S2 and D60. However, with Canon's 1Dx, I don't think they want to jump exactly into the space Kodak is aiming at. Better to fight off Kodak from top and bottom by some improvements to the D60. Just my guess, anyway.
I would be surprised if the D60's replacement would be a vast change. It doesn't need to be. I'm expecting maybe a 8-9 MP camera in pretty much the same price range (or maybe slightly more, given the solid demand for the D60).

Here is the spec for the Canon D90s
1. 9 mega pixel full size chip (I recon Canon will dump the smaller chip size because of all the problems they have caused)
2. Better control over skin tones, white balance, sharpness etc.
3. Flip & twist viewfinder with mirror up preview option
4. Dual card holder CF/MD and SM
5. New higher power L-Ion batt so you can't use the old D60 Batt.

Cool--where did you see that? Any information as to introduction and/or price (or it silly of me even to ask :) )

The d30 to d60 was about two years so using the logic of the same time between replacements, this PMA is not the year for a d60 replacement. That does no mean that Canon won't, it is just that it is a bit early to be replacing the D60
The strongest rumor I have seen is a replacement for the 1D, not to be confused with the 1Ds. The 1D replacement will likely be aimed at the sports pro market, like the 1D.
Eventually Canon will probably move both slightly up from the D60 for the serious Amateur and down to get the "Digital Rebel G" introductory DSLR. (Up and down are purely relative).

I thought there was only a year between introductions, so I went back and checked.
The D30 came out in autumn of 2000.

The D60 came out in late winter/early spring of 2002.

So it looks like a year and a half difference, which was more than I thought.

I have another reason to expect a replacement. Nikon has an 18-35/3.5-4.5 consumer lens that goes as wide as 27mm (equivalent) because of their 1.5X factor. Canon has the 20-35/3.5-4.5 which goes as wide as 32mm (equivalent). They may lose sales and market share to Nikon because of those who are not willing to spend $1300+ on the 16-35/2.8L. I expected Canon to come out with a 17 or 18-35mm medium speed lens or introduce a D60 replacement with a larger chip that has only a 1.3X factor and would be 12MP. I expect the replacement to cost $2000 - $2500. I'm not sure of the economics involved, but a 9MP full size chip seems to be a logical replacement if it can be sold for under $2500.

dpreview said the same thing about the d60 being discontinued. seems canon of canada more or less confirmed it. no specs though. probably have to wait until pma in march. I'd just be happy if they fixed the autofocus and the metering.

Just saw dpreview...so there really is something to this.
If the leak is this early, we won't have to wait for PMA (still 2 months away) to know what's going on.
It would be ironic if they were able to start selling the replacement when Kodak actually starts to ship the 14n.

Seems that the e-mail I got from my usual dealer (Germany) wasn't so wrong ;-)
He was already aware of this at the end of december...

I just checked the french website of "Chasseur d'images" http://www.photim.com/Infos/UneInfo.asp?N=747
and they have no news for the moment about the real successor of the D60.
They say they would see (just a supposition of theirs) 2 successors !

Some news from my usual dealer :
"Canon are not able to tell us very much about this at the moment. Two
cameras will be hitting the market at some point, one is the D40, and the
other will be the D80.
However, the Canon reps don“t know any more than this for the time being.
More information should reach you fairly quickly though."
That's all I know for the moment

This is the page that has the updates to the "rumors" as they happen.

Since it's all really speculation at the moment I thought I'd throw this out there. With the advent of the G3 and S45, Canon's really just making cameras that technically are equivalent to their predecessors, but with some improvements to make the camera a better quality product. Perhaps we will see some kind of a D65, essentially a D60 with most of the stuff fixed that everyone complains about?
Again, just speculation, but with their very recent history I'd not be surprised to see this happen.
