Hey Ya,

im in the market for x2 light stands. I will be using them to mount my Speedlight to with an umbrella and i also want the option to mount a strobe or a softbox, ect when i start to upgrade my lighting setup.

Can anyone recommend a good light stand?
is there a particular height i should be going for ect?

if anyone could help that would be great.

Thanks

What ever you do don't cheap out. Buy good name brands and get tall ones. If you buy cheap ones, you wont like it and will have to replace it with a good one later. Tall ones are better even if you don't plan on extending them all the way because they have a wider footprint. Remember you will be putting $300 or more worth of equipment on it and it only has to fall over once and you will wish you had a better stand.

YMMV

This (http://www.adorama.com/LTSP10AC2.html)is what I would recommend for speedlights. They would be a bit weak for heavy strobes but for the speedlight seems to be ideal.
They are much lighter, collaps to smaller size than heavy duty lights that you do not currently need.

I have the stand recommended in this post and its stable and could easily be used later for studio lights and larger softboxes. Read the reviews at B&H, its very well liked.

+3 on the impact lightstands.

we've used mine to hold up speedlights with 42" umbrellas to Elinchrome DLite4 with 36x36" softboxes.

only time one fell over was when the wind blew into the studio area and caught an umbrella lol

the legs go decently wide when at max width and hold pretty well IMO.

we had some Manfrotto Nanos there as well and as nice as they are, i don't particularly like the footprint of them

thanks for everyones replies.

im looking at the Impact light stands on B&H, but which ones should i get?
could i get the $19.95 ones http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/359885-REG/Impact_2205_Light_Stand_Black_.html and possibly add a lightbox to it and a strobe later?

Or would i have to stick to the 39.95 heavy duty ones for lightboxes and strobes? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=workaround.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=253069&is=REG

at the moment ill only be mounting speedlights to them with an umbrella but im just keeping in mind future upgrades.

Try and buy the heavy duty one for $38.95 because they are heavy duty and it's tall at 9.5ft and also it's an air-cushioned model, which means it will not snap your hands/fingers when you are losening them.. easy glide if you can call it that.

But don't get me wrong, the $19.95 type is also good for casual speedlights use...if the price is a problem for you..
