Very nice, Alan!

The eye caught mine, and I just couldn't help myself. Its reflection looks like a duck by Dali to me:

The Hooded Merganser rings a bell. Just last week my sister was explaining that this kind of duck is very rare to the pond just downhill from her residence. Will email to findout though. All I got was a shot of this guy diving, a bum shot indeed!

Interesting and beautiful shot Alan B.

This one looks to be the male; the other is the female, according to the pictures I found on Google.

Age and time of year can also play a part in making the same species look dramatically different...

Look instead in this case at the similarities,. rathr than the difference,. also be aware that in the case of this image,. the "hood" is not being raised as it is in the other photo...

Swap the rust color for balck and puff up that hood and they will look very similar ;)

Well,Allan B, a Rose called by any other name would still smell as sweet ;) .

Will check with sister and Google though to confirm. I could post my picture of this diving duck, although not very good, to compare notes. I did note that the male of this species did appear as your picture and the female was insignificant (more camouflaged).

Will reply. :)

The latin name is Italum Mafiosus ;)

It is noted for the hairstyle. This bird is impossible to mark, as the rings dissappear shortly after being placed on them. A pigeon was used to track this rare specimen... Turned out the duck is spending the winter in Cicily.
